Anyway, back on topic...  ;)

Not good at all across the board. The writing was on the wall before any of the openers debuted, but I still didn't imagine it would be this bad.

I would say that Tammy is a blow to Melissa McCarthy's star status, but given how lame the advertising has been, it's probably more accurate to say that her power is what saved it from tanking completely. Identity Thief may have been a terrible movie, but at least Universal ran a campaign that appealed to audiences and got butts into seats; Warner Bros had nothing after that one slo-mo shot set to "Gangsta's Paradise" (it doesn't help that the teaser and the full trailer both followed it with the seemingly far-too-drawn-out robbery scene). The fact that they tried so hard to tie it in with its 4th-of-July weekend release date is as clear a sign of desperation as any.

Deliver Us from Evil is a somewhat mysterious case. Horror hasn't been on at all this year, so it seemed as though something had to break out, and a high-profile release during July seemed like it would be successful (or at least BOM certainly thought so heading into the summer). I took their word for it, so when I finally saw the trailer, I was very underwhelmed. It doesn't look scary, and it doesn't have any apparent hook to get audiences to come and see it.

Earth to Echo also failed to capitalize on a relatively open market for its audience, but it seemed like such an odd prospect from the start (E.T. as found footage? really?) that its quiet performance makes sense.

The biggest blow here, however, is the drop for Transformers. I'm certainly not a fan of the film (at least on a genuine level) and I get that the enthusiasm isn't as high as it was for the previous films, but something has to dominate the 4th of July weekend with an iron fist, right? It will still be #1 with ease, but it's also set to be the least-attended #1 film over this weekend since, what, Cats & Dogs?

I think the best shot has to be Zach Snyder sending cameras up to space for MoS. I mean, this took it to another level.

Not as impressive as Alfonso Cuaron shooting his entire movie in space!
