Box Office Mojo claims budget is only 62 million

that can't be right

Maybe they try to go with the net budget, mojo ? (Not sure if they ever commit by what they mean by budget)

Could be them using that 84m budget told by the director with a 25% tax incentive (sound like a lot...., like using a new like this:

http://variety.com/2017/artisans/production/south-africa-production-incentives-3-1202004142/, and considering all cost available to the rebate, no cap, etc...)

First maze runner for example they write 34m, it had a 41.1m gross budget and a 7.406m granted tax credit from Louisiana (so depending on how much they could use/how much they sell it, 34m net is probably quite close).

Have not seen the movie to be able to have an opinion, but South Africa exchange rate was quite good since mid 2015.

1 USD gave around 10 Zar in early 2013, was between 13.5 and 15 around mid 2015 to mid 2017

That was probably what it was initially.

But remember that they needed to shut down and regroup months later due to the star's major accident.  That probably added the other $20mil as rumored (becoming $80+).

Yeah but stuff like that is also covered by insurance too I think.

This is also set to bring $40-50m from China (ow is predicted to be $20-25). And even conservatively 125m+ OS-China (Last one did 200 OS-China). I think 40 dom + 40 China + 125 OS-China = 205 ww is the minimum it will do. That's 2.5x the prod budget even using the 80+ figure. Making a third one helps sell dvd/blurays etc too in form of a trilogy/complete set.

The runtime on this thing is 2 HOURS AND TWENTY MINUTES.  Do these things all need to be this long?

This is the last movie of the franchise, so it makes sense in that regard.

Better than getting a last movie split in 2 movies with short running times. I'm looking at you, Mockingjay

Add Harry Potter and Avengers Infinity war to that infamous list.

I guess so?

Last Jedi - 2h 31

Guardians 2 - 2h 17

Spiderman 6 - 2h 13

Wonder Woman - 2h 21

Thor 3 - 2h 10

Logan - 2h 15

Furious 8 - 2h 16

Rogue One - 2h 13

Civil War - 2h 27

BVSDOJ - 2h 31

all action franchise movies appear to be very long.

All in all this should end as a respectable franchise both quality-wise and in the box office for it's genre.

It was never a Hunger Games but it was also nowhere near the disaster that Divergent was.

The budgets were very low too, so they made a respectable profit probably.

Hell the fact they got the whole story made is an accomplishment considering how many YA franchises couldn't get past 1 movie or flamed out

I think it is the only YA franchise outside the big 3 to actually finish its story onscreen. Divergent could have done that if Lionsgate didn't get greedy and split the final book despite not being a huge franchise to begin with.

Splitting Allegiant and then putting the first part one week before Batman v Superman. Mind boggling bad decisions
