Just curious, is clapping at the end of movies a common thing in American theaters? Always hear it mentioned. Never seen it happen once in the UK, however good a film is.

It's uncommon but not completely rare.

That has been my experience, too. A much less common occurence is the characters taking a bow and blowing kisses in response to the applause. I haven't seen the latter since the 1960s, and it's probably the only thing that I remember from that decade. Just kidding about the latter ;), but clapping for a movie is a curious phenomenon. It actually makes sense as a form of intra-audience communication--a way for the members of the audience, who are for the most part strangers, to tell one another that they've just had a pretty cool shared experience. The last time I recall there being applause from the majority of the audience was when watching Frozen, but I've seen some scattered applause for a few other movies this year. I don't know whether this is a uniquely American thing, but from comments I've seen over time from those who live in other countries, I wouldn't be too surprised if it were or close to it.

Depends. Like in Canada it seems to be more common... I've had applause after legit like any type of film. Big Hero Six, most action/thriller movies I've been to have had applause on like opening weekend and the week and weekend after... A lot of bit budget films and emotional indie Oscar bait films do too...

Also TIFF. Legit every screening has applause or standing ovations. It just happens for some absurd reason even if the film was shitty.

But like big rousing applause, discounting film festivals, was probably Les Mis. My run of the mill theatre had a standing ovation for the movie.

Audiences seem to applaud every movie in SoCal, it may also be that I watch movies on OW when the most receptive crowd watches it as well.

And in SoCal, sometimes you'll hear some whoop-whoops or even a name called out for some random person in the credits. It's kinda like Liittle League that way.

I'm not following your train of thought.  Unbroken is recounting a WWII vet's time as a POW in a Japanese camp.   And the brutal treatment POWs received while at Japanese camps is well documented.  Do you think movies like this should not be made, or maybe changed to such a degree that it's not even the same story?

I think that they definitely should be made. I also think that Hollywood should create more vehicles for Asian and Asian American characters that happen to be decent people. And they should give Asian American actors more opportunities to become movie stars. Yes, they should have a balanced portrayal of Asians (radical concept, I know!)...heroes, villains, romantic leads, action heroes, junkies, artists, drunks, college professors, superheroes, and everything in between. The problem is that we rarely see that...we only see the villanous WWII monsters, the martial artists and the “exotic,” submissive women. I know that Zamperini's story is awesome and worthy of being told. I just want a more balanced slate of films all in all.

WILD and BIG EYES were hit hard by the competition yesterday. It was smart of SPC to keep STILL ALICE out of the holiday slaughterhouse. I think it could strike a big chord with women over 40.

Kinda sad though that Julianne Moore has made a career of playing lesbians, pornstars, adulteresses, crazy high strung damaged women...but she's gonna win the Oscar for playing a nice, normal mom, wife and career woman.

This thread has added to my headache and I'm not quite sure why

Oh wait, my two least favorite actresses are warring at the box office and they're both doing fantastically

*hugs Seth Rogen*

really? with the multitudes of bad actresses, Meryl Streep and Angelina Jolie are the worst on the planet huh?

He probably dislikes them for reasons unrelated to their acting ability.

Personally, most of Jolie's films are bland to me. When Kung Fu :Panda is the most enjoyable film you've been a part of, there's something wrong

I haven't seen Girl, Interrupted though.

but it is irritating seeing Meryl get an Oscar nod for everything she appears in. I'm half surprised she didn't get nods for Lemony Snicket and Mamma Mia  :D

It's true that I feel like Jolie isn't reaching her fullest potential as an actress. you can see great stuff here and there but it's not rounded. though it's the problem w/ the system, great directors aren't knocking at the door for her like they do for her husband because so many of them make male centric stories and Jolie should be getting lead roles.

Same with meryl, people always complain about her not working w/ great directors, but when's the last time Scorsese or Fincher had a part in their movies that was worth her getting out of bed for?
