About the 11 wins, I don't really think they had much of an impact. Titanic had already made so much money by then that they probably added  2% at best to its final gross. According to Box Office guru, Titanic actually had one of its steepest drop that week:

 I mean, LOTR also swept 11 oscars but that wasn't enough for it to have the monstruous legs of Titanic. I think those oscars can only make a significant difference to medium sized hits.

 

Anyway, I see your point. But then, that leads to the question, what do you think deserved to have a run like Titanic?

Looking at the run, maybe you are right and the Oscars did not have so much impact. I see that biggest increase was after nominations, but that weekend was the same that San Valentine's and President Day, so maybe there was not so much impact. Anyway, the image of Cameron screaming "I am the king of the world" is so iconical as the film itself. It had to help for sure.

 

Relative to what film deserves a kind of run like Titanic's, I have to answer that maybe none. We live in an era where everything is consumed immediately but the good films already get great runs. My favorite modern film, Fellowship of the Ring, already had a great run around the globe (fuck the 2001 ER's ). But I do not think any film deserves to do what Titanic did if we look at the usual good runs. There is not any modern film that has a so good quality relative to the others in order to have a so big gap wiht the next one in terms of box office. Maybe the problem is mine and it is just I do not get the love for those films (Titanic and Avatar). I just have to say good for Cameron because he knew to make two films that people NEEDED to see at cinemas.

Titanic is definitely out of reach now with domestic looking at $940-950 million max and OS around $1.15 billion with China. But there is still a chance of inching past F7's OS gross. It needs around $1.05 billion OS-China to do so, maybe less if China doesn't drop quite as hard as predicted over the next few weeks.

Notably this week, China has bumped Australia out of the Top 5 offshore markets for TFA. The Middle Kingdom, with $65.7M, currently sits at No. 5. The UK is still tops with $162.5M, followed by Germany ($95.5M), France ($77.1M) and Japan ($69.4M). (Local PROC reporting by Ent Group has TFA at about $71.5M with Wednesday grosses included, which would lift it past Japan, but those are unconfirmed numbers.)...
