I don't like re-releases, so I don't think that extra $58m tacked on to Titanic matters. The movie sold over 120 million tickets in its original run to $600m. It's the greatest single box office run ever by a long shot. No amount of inflation or 3D or IMAX or anything else for all the new movies (including Avatar I might add) will change that. Titanic still the champ until proven otherwise.

E.T. sold $359m in its first run and came out in the middle of June with much more competition, yet it still was #1 for 6 weeks and alternated between 1 and 2 for the next 4 months and still made a #1 weekend in December.  don't forget there were about 50 million less people in the country (or more than the population of Canada and almost as much as England), and less theaters (multiplexes) and screens (drive-ins were much more popular in the 80s), which makes a big difference as well. this makes GWTW's runs even more impressive.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/about/adjuster.htm

average tickets prices in 1982: $2.94

1997/8: $4:59/4.69

2009/10 : $7.50/7.89

1939: $.23

A lack of home video guaranteed way more repeat viewings back then. What Titanic did in the home video era is just ridiculous.

Ice Age 3 destroyed Up's legs, though. IO should hold better since Terminator/Magic Mike aren't remotely targeting its demographic.

I was talking about its IM, not about its overall drop. It fell 50% on ID4 weekend because of that -39% on the Wednesday where IA3 opened. Up just followed the daily pattern of a normal movie on the weekend after, and that meant a 30%+ decrease on Saturday and a modest (very modest, in Up's case) recovery on Sunday.

Lack or competition or not, 15M on Friday is likely too good to be true, and with a 30%+ fall on Saturday that's what you need to get to 36M over the weekend.

A lack of home video guaranteed way more repeat viewings back then. What Titanic did in the home video era is just ridiculous.

you mean people actually waited for Titanic to come out on VHS to see it?  by the time the VHS came out Titanic had already made the vast majority of its box office. Titanic (like many of the tentpoles) was made for the big screen. back then, large screen TVs 60+ inch (and not widescreen or HD) were very expensive and rare. besides, E.T. came out during the early home video era anyway. you seem to be changing your conditions and qualifying Titanic's records.  i would say that Titanic is like a modern day E.T. or GWTW which is an accomplishment in itself and probably the last of its kind we will probably see in this age of HD video streaming.

ET came out in an era when home video was still not widespread. It existed, but generally people still had to go to the theater if they wanted to see a movie.

Titanic came out in an era when home video was super widespread. In fact, it was close to the widest for VHS. Blockbuster and the other video rental stores were huge. Definitely by that time people would "wait for video" on films.

ET also came out in an era when films really did play long. Its business was spectacular, but how it got there wasn't anomalous for the time. While film legs in the 90s were definitely better than they are today, what Titanic did was unreal. Even ignoring the size of its gross, the sheer longevity is completely out of context for the time.

Facts are facts. Back when E.T. came out, people weren't sure they would get to see it again. Star Wars also benefited from this and so did Gone With The Wind. By the time 1997 rolled around VHS was a widespread part of the culture. There was very much a market for renting movies by that time. Blockbuster was a thriving company and now they're bankrupt. 128 million tickets in that market is insane.

Titanic was released on Home video in September 1998. By that time Titanic had pretty much completed its theatrical run and had crossed $600m the weekend before the vhs release. So its run is not that much different from E.T.

My point is in a market where people could have just waited, they still chose to see it on the big screen in unbelievable numbers. Early home video like in the early 80's wasn't even affordable for the vast majority of people so most of them wouldn't even bother with it. By the mid-90's it was a mainstream, much more affordable option.

Agree for the most part. Titanic was a phenomenon just like E.T. So anybody who wanted to see them had watched them in the theater. The percentage of people who would wait for the vhs release of Titanic to watch it for the first time would be very small.

I wonder if Universal will eventually add more screens near the end of JW's run just like how Disney and most studios add screens near the end of their movies runs to increase gross even further or to reach a milestone. Disney increased TA's screens from 495(day 78) to 1705(day 120) which helped it cross 620m. Disney also did the same for Cinderella so it could reach 200m. The Dark Knight also had an increase in screens later on.

They did it because it was Labor Day, I doubt anyone cared at that point whether it would finish with 619m or 621m.
