If people aren't continuing to see them in the theaters, why wait? (Or is it a chicken/egg thing? In today's short-attention-span world, would people continue to see a movie if it were kept in theaters for 9 months? Frozen is the only movie of late whose theatrical run was actually crippled by its home release, and which I think would have truly benefited from being kept off home video for as long as possible.)

Or do you just mean they should still take them out of theaters, and just wait another 6 months without it being available in any form?

I meant movies in general, not just Inside Out.

Studios should go back to waiting 9 months to a year to release movies on video.

I honestly doubt I would end up buying any Blu Rays if I had to wait that long...

That. Rushing out home video releases devalues the product. I'm pretty sure it contributes heavily to video sales getting worse and worse ever year.

I get it will never happen. In the studio's mind they have to get it out as quickly as possible to make as much money as possible. Eventually movies will be out on video 2-3 months after they are put in theaters, and movies having great legs will become a thing of the past.

Hmm, maybe? But on the list of things affecting hv sales, that's probably near bottom. Like, below "woulda bought the movie, but got mugged by a roving band of larcenous leprechauns on the way to store" kind of low.

You wouldn't have survived the 90s in that regard.

In fact, as someone who grew up in the age of Blockbuster Video and the like, I wonder how most of the younger generation here (as in Ethan Hunt, DAJK, etc.) would react if they were put into a time machine back to that time period where if you wanted to own a movie right away you would have to pay like $90-100+ to do so because 99% of new releases were released for rental only and otherwise had to wait another 6 months for it to become available at a much more reasonable price. Ah, those were the days...

4TH UPDATE 9:54AM & 3RD UPDATE 2:27AM, Saturday: Updated figures with notables The Columbus Day holiday weekend is providing a cash kick to studios’ bank accounts thanks to 14% K-12 schools off on Friday and 40% off on Monday. Twentieth Century Fox’s The Martian continues its roll along the fertile terrain  with an estimated $10.8M Friday night (besting its $9M-$10M matinee projections) and a $36.5M second weekend (vs. its earlier $32M-$34M estimate). Sony’s Hotel Transylvania 2 is looking at a strong third weekend hold of -31% with $23M. HT2 became the first 2015 autumn film to cross the $100M mark last night (it will be at $117.5M by Sunday), and The Martian will follow as the second one on Sunday with an estimated $108.2M. Warner Bros.’ Pan needs every single child out of school and in theaters to gain any ground on its $150M estimated budget. Friday’s B.O. was only $5.1M, with an estimated second place debut of $17.4M this morning $18.25M … not so good and it’s in 3D. If Pan had cost $15M, we’d be screaming that it was the cash cow of all ages. That’s not the case with its budget right up there on the screen with full-on VFX and zero sets.

Pan is pretty much flopping at our theatre. Did the equivalent of 6M today (and then whoever showed up for the 10:00 show but I can't imagine it having much of an effect). Martian is holding steady, earning the equivalent of $16M today, and Hotel Transylvania earned $13M. War Room did $3.2M and Hyena Road did $4M.

Speaking of War Room, has anyone seen it? I've only seen about 3 minutes of it during theatre checks, and while I guess it's great for its target audience, its a bad film. The acting is bad, the dialogue is bad. One scene I saw had a guy trying to mug these two women and one of them stopped him by saying "in the name of Jesus I commend you to lower your blade."

Yeah, that time was so different. There really does feel like a "now-now-now" mentality (and I don't mean among the studios, I mean among audiences) particularly as the Internet has gotten faster and VOD has become more prevalent. Broadband has essentially killed the very concept of waiting for anything. (If the studios went back to the old longer release windows tomorrow, I'm sure a good amount of people would just pirate to get home copies in the interim, rather than patiently bide their time until the actual studio home release.)

Listen to me, I'm not even 28 yet and already I feel "old." :)

I went to see it with my mom. Everyone seemed to enjoy it but as long as the movie preaches to the choir they're fine. Some of the dialogue was cringeworthy and the jokes were terrible but everyone still clapped and laughed. Plus the move ends with a jump rope competition. Felt like it became a completely different movie. The gun scene literally had me rolling my eyes. I mean any Christian can tell you it doesn't work like that. Edited by Rman823

It's even getting quicker to HBO etc. American Sniper was already on HBO. And ASM2 got to Starz 7 months after release. I mean it would be at least a year or more before new films arrived

I hold off seeing a lot of new films these days as I know they'll be available on in flight entertainment within a few months. Particularly smaller scale films - ie the ones that would benefit most from my patronage. I do a few long haul trips every year (humblebrag) so I need a steady supply of films to watch to keep me entertained.

On a side note, I too miss the good old days of waiting for rental (6 months), home video (usually a year but I remember big releases taking ages), Sky/cable release (2 years), network TV (eg BBC/ITV around 3 years). I remember using all of my pocket money to buy a rental copy of Alien Resurrection. I was Alien obsessed at 13 years old but wasn't able to see it at the cinema. I'd read/watched all of the making-of stuff, read all of the reviews and I was still relatively unspoiled. If it was now, I'd probably have seen half the film prior to release, and discussed/read the other half on a forum somewhere.

Sorry - nostalgia rant over.

GO MARTIAN!
