Compare Star Wars drop to pretty much every holdover this week, and then factor in if was coming off a 90m 3rd weekend, then the drop doesn't seem that bad.  The only major holdover to not have a harsh drop was The Big Short

btw, that movie has a legally binding limit - here in Germany - to allow only audience to watch it who are at least 16 years old, no matter if with or without parents at the cinema.

 

From 3 big markets (Germany, Russia, Australia) and 5 small ones (Taiwan,HK, Iceland, Kuwait, UAE)

Of course but Leo has been a draw now for several of years.  "J. Edgar" was just a hard sell and clearly oscar bait that fell flat.  If I had to bet for or against Leo, it's an obvious choice.   Since "Catch me if you Can" in 02' he's done 13 movies and 9 of them will have grossed over 100 or more (Reverant definitely breaking 100).   Not a bad average.   "J Edgar, Blood Diamond, Body of Lies and Revolutionary Road" were the underperfomers of the bunch.

Was hoping for a sub-50 but there was just to much competition and everyone in their mother has seen the film.  I guess I was being greedy, lol.  It still won but Leo almost got it.

And the Big Short added about 1,000 theaters.  A very disappointing expansion (which also hurt my derby so feh!)

If Return of the Jedi had opened in the same amount of theaters TFA did, and with the same average, that would have resulted in a $259,593,333 Opening week-end.

 

I'm starting to think that The Force Awaken's Opening week-end record will not fall anytime soon, except maybe to Ep8 or Ep9, because such a high theater average for a 4000+ theaters release is not easily reproduced, and with Inflation so low these last years...

I've seen most of the films that will probably be nominated and really don't have a clear favorite.   Nothing stands out this year, imo.  I guess Fury Road would get my vote.  Spotlight checks the "socially important" boxes but it looked like an HBO tv movie.  Carol is as PC as it gets, so maybe that wins.
