Oscars Discussion - Nominations in First Post - Red Carpet Time!

Recommended Posts

Not as bad as it could have been. My complaints:EL&IC for Best Picture? Really? No Star Spangled Man for Original Song. I know its a lot to ask for a comic book movie to get a nomination for that, but watching that performed live at the Oscars would have been HILARIOUS. It would have drawn in ratings more than the two that got nominated (Seriously? Just two?)No Tintin for Best Animated = there is a flaw in the categoryOh well, at least the winner this year will probably be something good. That's more than most of the recent winners can say.

Positive shocks:Mara nominated.Oldman nominated.Margin Call for ScreenplayDisappointments:No director/Picture nom for TGWTDTAlbert Brooks not nominated for Drive.Fassbender snubbed!TGWTDT not nominated for Score.WTFs:Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close gets BP/SA nominations. WTF.Bridesmaid for Screenplay. Unbelievable (eye roll)P.S.: Only two nominees for Original Song? Just abolish the category. That's pathetic.

The best picture category, actor, actress and supporting categories are a joke this year. Von Sydow for a mute in ELIC is one of the biggest jokes I've ever seen and so is the nomination for best picture. Hugo is good, but 11 noms, seriously? Come on.Hollywood is in love with itself, that's the only explanation as to why they are nominating movies about movies.

Hollywood and the entertainment industry in general has always been in love with itself.

It sounds like you mean that no good animated films have won it yet.

Obvious negatives: no Tintin. And that's weak for The Help. No technical noms nor screenplay... A mess. I thought it was the best option to spoil Artist's victory.

It never had a shot. Nothing does. Hugo and The Descendants are the only movies with any glimmer of beating The Artist, but that won't happen either.

Yeah overall, the nominations were about what was expected. But a bit surprised that The Help didn't get more and no Tintin for animated movie either. And to follow up on Impact's point, yeah, what is with just 2 song nominations?

Not really, quite a bit thought for visuals and song.YAY FOR HUGO!!!! Though no nod for Ben K.-:(Real Steel-was kind of hoping to see it get nominated, was not expecting it!Was hoping to see MI4 in a tech cat, but I figured it wouldn't as the franchise has never been nominated, same with X-Men.Trivia: War Horse is the first BP nom since Two Towers not to be nominated for any other major cats.

I completely disagree. If you've paid much attention to the Academy over even just the past few years you'd realize this year they definitely threw some curveballs.Overall they weren't as expected at all. Every major category has at lease one big surprise in it. Consider...Best Picture: EL&IC (biggest shock) and Tree of Life (minor shock, had no momentum but makes cut)Lead Actor: Fassbender snubbed in favor of Demian Bichir despite having every precursor. Leo out.Lead Actress: Mara in, Swinton out.Support Actor: Albert Brooks snubbed despite precursors and loses his spot to a silent performance from EL&ICSupport Actress: Okay, no surprises here...Directing: Malick makes it in ahead of Fincher, Spielberg, others...Screenplay (Original): Margin Call, A SeparationScreenplay (Adapted): TTSS makes cut (minor surprise) Edited by ravon80

Bichir had the SAG nomination and Fassbender didn't. That counts for a lot.Of course Mara supplanted Swinton who had the SAG nom whereas Mara didn't (Same with Oldman replacing Leo), so it's not always indicative.
