I dunno.....the thing of Marvel Superhero-movies being released in the first weekend of May.....has suddenly now became more obligational. Every Marvel-movie needs to open that first May weekend.

When will there be a time when a Non-Marvel movie opens that date?

There probably won't be another non-Marvel movie on that date for a while. The last non-Marvel superhero movie to be the summer opener was MI3 in 2006. That was 10 years ago.

I see it happening, the wolf always sees it coming but you my friend are a sheep and wont see it until its too late. then you're lunch

But piracy doesn't dramatically affect movies in the North American market. I understand it's a very different story in other markets, but here it just doesn't hurt movies that much. Most people just don't give a shit. The ones who have the know-how and willingness are the same ones who're most invested in seeing movies like this on the big screen. There are very very few who are on the fence about a highly anticipated blockbuster and decide only to watch a pirated version.

Maybe not the first weekend, but I can imagine that piracy hurts the repeat viewing business. That's why the multipliers are getting worse, of course the "give it to me now" mentality plays a big role, too.

The repeat viewing business is small to begin with. Bigger reasons for shrinking multipliers are the huge push towards Thursday previews (and opening weekends in general) and the effort by studios to open movies in as many theaters and on as many screens as possible, while at the same time shrinking the theatrical window so they're out of theaters sooner than ever.

I think it is self-evident that piracy has some effect on box office - people are very aware that you can watch a decent version online of a movie almost as soon as it's in cinemas, and naturally there are going to be some people who prefer to do that, compared to, say, 30 years ago where it was much more difficult to watch a movie outside of a cinema. Given how huge piracy is, it's impossible that it has no effect.

However, I don't believe that piracy has much effect on a case by case basis, it's more of a general issue. For a movie like Civil War, most people are gonna watch it on the big screen regardless of how soon the torrent is up, or what quality it is. But it's very difficult to establish just how great an effect piracy does or doesn't have.

As for repeat viewing effects? Like said above, the number of people who re-watch a movie several times in its first theatrical run is marginal at best. And though I'm sure there are plenty of people who have rewatched Civil War online already, you have to ask yourself if those people would really have gone to see it again if the stream wasn't available. An illegal viewing doesn't equate to a lost sale.

Moreover, it is essentially impossible to track which box office sales are rewatches - they are just sold as normal tickets. There are so many factors as to why a movie might have shortened legs that you can't just pin it on piracy. Hell, Batman v Superman, a near-identical movie to Civil War, had no HD stream upon release and Civil War is legging it out far better than that movie.

I've seen it twice and I'm thinking about going again one more time. A friend and I couldn't synch up so he went with some other folks and saw it in 3-D. He said he was very pleased with it in that format.

What are people's thoughts on the 3-D for Cap3 here?

You gotta make sure the formatting is right man. After you type @ and then a letter, there should be a drop down of names. The more you type, the more specific the list is.

Really strong Tuesday increases all around. Money Monster and Mother's Day both increasing more than 50% from Monday. Cheap Tuesday's seem to really have come into their own in the past year or so as more theater chains have added it, a number of Regal theaters doing it in the US as well.

Your Wednesday drops are way way way too generous. There is no way Money Monster drops only 16% after increasing over 50% on Tuesday.

In my family, the teens are the ones who are into the pirated online movies while the older ones go to the theater...but watch less movies.  The teens don't miss any of the big movies because they just watch them on their laptops.  Part of that is that the parents don't want to spend the money to send the kids to the movies every week.    So it makes sense to me that there is an "adult" feel to it with discount days doing better.   If the parents in my family shell out for movies at all, discount Tue would be the one.
