It was never retooled. It was called the Woods so people wouldnt know it was a BW sequel.

It's been Blair Witch the whole time, they just called it The Woods so they could do a surprise reveal at Comic Con and create buzz.  Between that, the 100% RT score to start (lol) and the other marketing they tried, they tried to go viral and build hype.

 

Problem is, if the greatest magic trick in the world has a turd as the reveal, it's still not going to do well.  Next time just make a good movie dammit.

Open Road's Snowden brought in a reported $390,000 on Thursday night, though Open Road has not yet responded to emails asking whether this total includes Wednesday night's Fathom screenings. The studio has confirmed both the Fathom screenings and Thursday night previews will be rolled into Friday's gross. Given the lingering questions surrounding these numbers we aren't ready to offer up any comparisons.

Bridget Jones's preview numbers are disappointing but TBH the OS numbers will likely be enough where the domestic total is just gravy. Working Title had a similar situation with Johnny English Reborn which made ton of money OS but pittance in domestic

Unfriended did 656k in previews.  (15.8m OW)

So Blair Witch is looking at around mid to high teens this weekend.

 

The closest comparison to Bridget that I can find is Mother's Day, which did 225k in previews for an 8m OW and This is Where I leave You which did 100k previews for a 11.7m OW. So low teens should be the target.

Definitely not a good sign at all.

FWIW the original movie attracted just as many detractors as it did fans when it came out. That's why it faded fast after audiences caught on to it.
