Weekend Thread...Friday numbers (Deadline) HF: 6M| BBM: 5M| PD: 4.2| LLL: 3.97 (PG 18) - NOT THE PIRACY THREAD (OR THE POLITICS THREAD)

I would have give Silence an F so I wish I could get polled. Movie blows. I don't care what they were going for but it wouldn't connect with anyone who likes movies. Maybe some glutton for punishment who thinks watching grass grow is good storytelling. I am just as happy when lousy movies bomb as when great ones succeed. I'm rooting hard nobody wastes their hard earned money on that pile of crap.

25 extra points if you book in advance.

Although those extra points do cost AUD1.20 for booking online but it's worth it for no queuing.

It's 2:30 and the session start time is 2:30. I'm in JB Hi Fi right now.

2:36 Star Trek Beyond 3D Blu Ray purchased. 20% off all BR's

2:40 Put Star Trek in car.

2:42 Enter cinema foyer.

And....there's not a single person in the foyer.

2:49 Take my seat. About 40% full.

2:50 Collateral Beauty starts.

OMG What have I done ?

Not like you're missing much. If it's anything like the one I go to, you've got like fifteen minutes before the trailers even start. So many ads.

How was about time was just as problematic?

With About Time, some people have a problem with

Spoiler

the Rachel McAdams character not being aware of his powers and consider the relationship inherently dishonest and manipulative.

Just explaining what the criticisms are, don't shoot the messenger, etc.

What about criticizing Beauty and the Beast for the same reasons? I'm not saying they should, but that they would if they were consistent.

It will be interesting to see the response, the usual suspects will try it, but BatB is an old story so it has a major advantage on Passengers, a new story judged solely by 2016 values. The latest BatB will be coming out in 2017 but it's also got a history and the fandom also attached to this story for decades, that can override whatever "problematic" elements there are, at least for some people.

Nostalgia can be very powerful and if the audience is charmed enough by a story, they can overlook the uncomfortable elements. Take The Parent Trap, even in 1961, that was not really good parenting, by 1998 standards, it is pretty terrible parenting but Lindsay Lohan was so charming as the twins and it help up pretty nicely compared to the old version. Whereas if the idea of The Parent Trap had never been a story before and it was just this new 2017 movie where divorced parents split up identical twins as babies, each took a child and went their separate ways for 10+ years, everyone would be horrified, want to call Child Services and think the parents were too awful to deserve a happily ever after.

I like BATB, I don't want it attacked. I'm just saying the self righteousness rang a bit hollow when similar plots that aren't original properties don't get the same treatment.  But thanks for your thoughtful answer.

Before the 20th century there was not a lot people knew about children's ~ psychology, a lot was still in development in the basic thinking of the people and also of the 'specialists' in the midst of the 20th century and later on still. Also the scientists have dinosaurs, the same counts for doctors,  teachers, and ... other people usually helping to get awareness to parents.

Some people in the say still have no idea.

Guess you better go over to the review thread where many are loving it.

Just got out of Patriots Day and thought it was not only decently made but also respectfully done to those involved. I think Wahlberg and Berg have a nice thing going with these based on true event movies. Ive enjoyed them all so far. Also while I was sitting in the theater I was thinking of a weird coincidence where I was watching The Following the night of the bombing and it was interrupted for coverage and now Kevin Bacon is in the movie based on it. Felt like a personal six degrees moment.

Well, you bought Star Trek Beyond, so it isn't a total loss, whatever your reaction to CB.

So...

Patriots Day has a shot at 5M at my theatre today. 4.8ish is more likely but I think the late show will be strong.

As for Monster Trucks @That One Guy (and I'm seriously NOT lying guys)

8.5-9M. I'm not kidding. Our strongest movie by far tonight. I was utterly shocked. Unless people come out hating it, I could see 35 for the weekend

Spoiler

so the club might make it?  Actually, I'm not surprised. It has opened pretty well in several overseas markets, which is part of why I joined your club.
