The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

My theater's acting weird with Alita too. For whatever reason, it currently has showtimes starting at Wednesday morning and through the day. I don't know if that was a mistake, but it is kinda weird, especially when every other theater's just doing previews.

Maybe people are confusing it with the music group and accidentally clicking on it. Does a view count if you only watch like 5 seconds?

I saw someone mention that you have to watch 30 seconds for it to count as a view, but I have no clue if that's true or not.

This is also a solid number for Cold Pursuit. Better than Mile 22, which opened to 13.7M.

Pulse always 8:35-8:49 EST:

The LEGO Movie 2: 110/15 minutes - yesterday at that time it were 120/15; e.g. The Grinch (67.6M OW) had at that time 184/15
What Men Want: 87/15 - yesterday at that time 44/15, nice jump
Cold Pursuit: 30/15 - yesterday 27/15; Miss Bala had 11/15 at that time, Spider's Web 32/15, Hunter Killer 11/15, Serenity 23/15
The Prodigy: 3/15 - not good to that time, yesterday it were 4/15; Escape Room had 36/15 same time and day

And Pulse always 10:50-11:04 EST:

The LEGO Movie 2: 160/15 minutes - yesterday 113/15; e.g. The Grinch had at that time 294/15. I wish I would have counted better sales numbers today but due to the brand name the walk ups will probably be very good and I hope that it can cross the 50M OW mark.
What Men Want: 117/15 - yesterday 52/15; still a bit behind of what The Upside had at the same time (130/15) but it's a good jump compared to yestersay and I would also say it should reach around 25M
Cold Pursuit: 47/15 - yesterday 25/15; Miss Bala had 25/15 at that time, Spider's Web 42/14, Hunter Killer 24/15, Serenity 31/15; I'm more optimistic now that it has a decent start
The Prodigy: 25/15 - yesterday 10/15; way better now, Escape Room had 80/15 same day and daytime but The Possession of Hannah Grace had only 27/15 and that on Friday

And MT:
#1 The Lego Movie 2 21%
#2 The Wandering Earth 10%
#3 What Men Want 7.2% - Night School had at that time 7.1%, The Upside 6.6% but both with way less competition
#4 Glass 4.8%
#5 Cold Pursuit 4.8%

I'm pretty sure it's 5 seconds.  Movies that get advertised on youtube will have high view counts and very, very low like counts relative to views because the views didn't come from the actual video page where you can click the like button, but from another video's page as a pre-roll ad.  Compare that to pretty much any other trailer with a similar view count, even ones from 5 or 6 years ago and you have way more likes:

Cold Pursuit 28 1032 2.13%
Lego Movie 2 387 3183 12.16%
The Prodigy 24 1695 1.42%
What Men Want 436 1583 27.54%

I should mention first and foremost that I forgot to check Lego's 4PM previews (I'm only used to 7PM studios. STOP DOING PREVIEWS EARLY). Maybe it sold a lot in that timeframe, maybe it didn't, I dunno. Also, neither Cold Pursuit and Prodigy have previews tonight at my theater (they're probably trying to squeeze as much money out of the many holdovers as they can before they disappear), hence the more deflated numbers. Then again, they probably weren't making much anyways

Pursuit:

35% of The Commuter (4.8M)

58% of 15:17 to Paris (7.3M)

47% of Death Wish (6.2M)

117% of Sicario 2 (22.2M)

47% of Skyscraper (11.6M)

65% of Mile 22 (8.9M)

61% of The Mule (10.7M)

Again, I don't have previews to help the movie out, but...yeah.

Anyway, Lego:

114% of Peter Rabbit (28.5M)

102% of Hotel Transylvania 3 (44.9M)

170% of House w/ Clock (45.2M)

213% of Smallfoot (49M)

86% of Grinch (58M)

149% of Spider-Verse (52.8M)

The comps in the mid-40s do give me pause, but let's be optimistic and still gun for ~55M

Prodigy:

73% of Winchester (6.8M)

37% of Strangers 2 (3.8M)

13% of Quiet Place (6.5M)

171% of Hell Fest (8.8M)

23% of Escape Room (4.1M)

Eh? Maybe it reaches the Hell Fest comp?

Men:

92% of Acrimony (15.8M)

283% of Uncle Drew (43.1M)

101% of Night School (27.5M)

119% of Nobody's Fool (16.4M)

Around the ballpark of Night School's my guess

Victoria Update:

Cold Pursuit 7:20 - 39/87

144% Bad Times at the El Royale (10.3M)

72% First Man (11.56M)

47% Glass (19.13M)

Don't think it'll come close to the Glass comp, but 10M should be doable.

LEGO 6:45 - 40/89

138% Grinch (93M)

Don't really have a lot of kids' movies comps since I only started tracking in October and the theatre I track didn't play Nutcracker or Bumblebee, but this seems really strong.

Watched The Prodigy tonight.  It was meh - flat, cold, and stiff.  If you liked The Boy, Glass, Godsend, Dark Water, The Disappointments Room, Shut In, Friend Request, The Sixth Sense, and A Cure for Wellness you would like this.

I don't think the high YT trailer views were a sign of larger things to come. - the overall movie didn't blow away with action

The Prodigy lucked out on the scheduling, like a movie opening before Christmas, but I think this will drop drastically against Happy Death Day 2 on V-day.

It had some jump unique jump scares, but a limited story.

My gut is the cinemascore would be somewhere around a C, Escape Room must be looking at another good hold this week against direct competition and is Escape Room a 4-star movie like the legs and cinemascore promise?

*The Child's Play trailer looks like this one will roll off the assembly line with a 30M OW and maybe a PG-13 rating in the spirit of IT

Wow Eric, sorry I have a life :apocalypse: Anyways, apparently keeping AMC's site open while my laptop is in sleep mode doesn't work anymore bc the showtimes are redirecting to the listings :whosad: Or maybe it's a glitch for a loophole? Idk. Anyways, no comps. Sry.

Pretty sure he was giffing the lack of crowds for Lego 2.
