The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

1st local has set its schedule for this Friday and added 1 screen for Atomic Blonde and 1 split screen for Emoji and dropped NO movies (so WW and Baby Driver get to continue with a full small screen for another week).  Funny enough, Saturday is not yet for sale, so I think the theater wants to see how everything presells another few days before sticking to the following calls...

To make room for the 2 new movies, Spidey (which had 2 screens) gave up its smallest screen and has kept the largest theater screen, dropping from 9 to 5 showings/day.  Also, Apes gave up its second screen, but the one it gave up was its larger screen, so it now is only shown 5 times on the theater's smallest screens.  Valerian gave up its larger screen to also only get a smallest screen.  And the 2 new movies each get one of the larger screens (but not the largest, which Spidey keeps again)...

My theater is getting A Ghost Story and Lady Macbeth this weekend and is actually putting the former in one of the biggest houses. Oof that is likely to be a really spacious auditorium. I bet it gets downgraded on Saturday and they put the second print for Girls Trip in there.

That is a real lack of bet on the 3D. Clearly they know it won't be a big movie like Cars 3 or DM3.

Lmao at that WftPotA drop.

It's not like it's opening to 40M+ where people would settle for 3D if they can't get into 2D. Family films always get rid of their 3D after like 3 weeks at my theater.

Deep Wang updates:

- Emoji is less than half of Boss Baby and below Captain Underpants

- Atomic Blonde is low, no comps, but it is way low. Is at less than a third of Emoji's presales so far

- Dark Tower is also very low currently, less in gross than Atomic Blonde but at least it has 10 days to go

So maybe don't expect big or even moderate numbers this weekend

Yikes.  Emoji will probably just squeak by 20M.  Atomic Blonde will probably struggle with 15M.

Doesn't seem good for Emoji. Low to mid 20s, maybe?

At this point I'm just hoping for a $15m weekend for Atomic Blonde and then $60m+ total.

One thing's for sure: these openers doing so poorly is going to give Dunkirk and the rest crazy legs. Even Valerian could leg it to $50m

I'm new around here...any examples of movies turning it around in the last few days before launch?

Yeah, I'm not too surprised by that tracking. I've been following AB pretty closely and it barely popped up at all before Monday. What gives me hope is that it's surged quite a bit the past couple of days on Pulse. Now with that said, it's still really inconsistent. Whereas Emoji will usually sell 15-25 tickets over the course of 10 minutes, I've seen AB as high as 35 but as low as 6 in the past 2 days. It's still discount Tuesday so the next 2 days will really tell us where it's headed. I'm still cautiously hoping for 20M.

Oh god that's bad for Emoji.

I'm thinking people are just not able to bring themselves to click "Buy" for tickets to something titled The Emoji Movie. It may be the moment Hollywood finally went too far.

Which got great reviews, and the plot looked fun from the trailers. Emoji is keeping an embargo till Friday apparently, so not expecting much there tbh, and the trailer makes it look like the abandoned child of WiR and Inside Out

Both studios projecting 20M for the weekend.

The Emoji movie marketing campaign is basically this

It's like the studio is daring you to embarass yourself when you walk up to the counter and say "One for the Emoji movie, yes the one with the poop on the poster"
