Yeah this was a slow day today. Not anything to get worried about, especially since it's still more than a month away, but still kind of boring. Tomorrow, I'll have Hobbs & Shaw to work with, so that will be fun.

Not really sure what to use as a comp for this film, since as I understand it horror isn't that pre-sale heavy.  Maybe.  For now, gonna throw in a few recent ones along with JW2 and hope for the best.

It's ironic in a way, but I'm starting to think Pika Pika might be my best comp right now.  Partially for the comp'd number, but also because it too has a relatively long pre-sale window (30 days).  I mean, so did H&S (35 days), but I'm not thinking It 2 is gonna roll in 28m in previews. ;)

So, sadly not gonna put H&S in for quite a while, if ever.

Speaking of comps, only gonna keep the actual comp number (the one in the last column) for a few more days as their utility is next to nil right now.  Also gonna drop all comps starting on Friday (at the T-27 mark) except for Pika Pika, as by then films will be kinda sorta getting close enough to their premieres that what little utility there is now will in fact be gone (I don't see much point in comparing a T-27 day and a T-12 day, for instance).

The comps that I remove though, will start reappearing around the T-20 mark, more or less, depending on how much they aren't being influenced by their start of pre-sales.

As for the actual comp number I have at the end?  Still mulling that over.  Might bring it back as I bring back the comps.  I might wait 'till the last 10 days or so instead.  Not sure really which way I'll go on that.

Play it by ear, as usual. :)

Actually I didn't plan to count today but it went so fast that I counted 3 of the 5 new movies (at least on Thursday I plan to count all of them to get some nice comps for the future ;)).

Today I looked at Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, The Art of Racing in the Rain and The Kitchen:

In all shortness, Scary Stories did fine with already 428 sold tickets for Thursday and 265 tickets for Friday (in 7 theaters; NY, Assembly Row in Boston and Phoenix was missing). For comparison, Crawl had on Monday at that time 143 sold tickets for Thursday and 114 for Friday (each in 9 theaters, only NY was missing). Midsommar had in 6 theaters 42 sold tickets for Friday on Monday. Scary Stories was most popular in LA, San Francisco and Miami but also not unpopular in Texas.

The Kitchen has indeed no Thursday showtimes and 216 sold tickets for Friday (in 8 theaters). Idk, it could be that the lack of Thursday shows are helping but this Friday number is also not bad.

The Art of Racing in the Rain was so far a bit muted with 62 and 66 sold tickets in 8 theaters (but the trailers are really nice IMO, we will see).

I took a casual glance at Scary Stories last night and I was surprised to see a decent number of tickets sold for Thr night at Century Arden.  More than Dora, as a matter of fact.

Of course, different pre-sale habits here as well as different showtimes.  But Scary Stories might be primed to do a bit better than expected.

Or be heavily frontloaded.  Always a possibility with a big name attached to the project.

Doing well at Century Arden doesn't mean jack if it's not also doing decently elsewhere in the region, naturally.  But I was at least a little surprised to see it doing pretty well at all.

(Don't ask for any sort of comp or predicition - low openers like this are WELL outside of my comfort zone)

I'm actually surprised you have 10 showings.  Out here in Sacto, only one theater has it (for two showings).  Which is odd because at 1,500 theaters you'd think it'd be in more than one locally.  How many theaters is it in your neck of the woods?

5 theaters, each with two showings.

Interesting.   Maybe the indie joints here (which I never check out) will pick it up for the weekend (they don't have their schedule up yet).  Or maybe some of the other places will add it at the last second.

This is one that you shouldn't take that seriously. Not only is there one comp, but said comp is the biggest previews for a PG movie ever, and has an adult/fanboy skew. So yeah, different worlds.

So putting that into perspective, we really don't have much to work with. So with that said...eh, I guess it could be worse?

That's not bad. I don't know if it will hit that high, especially since this is a brand, both as a book series and del Toro as a producer, but it's a promising start. If it follows Slender Man or Crawl with that preview, it would cross 20M.

That does match what I was casually seeing at one theater locally for Dora and Scary Stories.  Now that comment about horror ramping up a bit earlier than some family films is something to consider, as is the brand bit we've both commented on.

But, maaaaaaaaybe the signs of a mini-breakout here?  Nothing substantial.  But won't surprise me if it over-performs tracking now.

Dora - Scary Stories - Racing in Rain - It: Chapter 2

Thursday Previews

Southern Maine Cinemagic
Movie Today   8/1 8/5 Total %   SOs Shows
Dora 5   12 17 1335 1.27%   0 9
Scary Stories 7   0 7 496 1.41%   0 6
It: Chapter 2 11   10 21 1675 1.25%   0 9

Breezy sales over the weekend.  This is my first time really tracking smaller films, so I don't know if it's just our theater being walk-up wonky or if this is how slow the under 20M previews normally look.  It -- for this theater - had good weekend this early.

Lincoln Square 13
Movie Today   8/1 8/5 Total %   SOs Shows
It: Chapter 2 110   306 416 2258 18.40%   0 7

Not WOW but very solid.  They added another standard showing at 5PM, yet there's only been 3 standard tickets sold since they went on sale.

Empire 25
Movie Today   8/1 8/5 Total %   SOs Shows
Dora 53   47 100 927 10.78%   0 3
Scary Stories 37   76 113 292 38.69%   0 2
Racing In Rain 19   21 40 252 15.80%   0 2
Good Boys 55   N/A 55 284 19.36%   0 2

Again, this is more the "gathering data for comps later" stage.  Good Boys just popped up, so I grabbed it for a "first day".

And thanks to @Porthos for the input on the new format.

Wow. It 2's previews over Endgame? Feige's out here quaking in his boots.

I kid, I kid. But despite the abnormally large preview #, I guess it does show that interest is still very, very strong. Sure presales are very slow and steady at the moment, but those preview #s at least show there's a lot of demand for this. Of course we can only wait and see how much demand there is in the coming days.

Also, now every theater I'm tracking has IT showtimes up...except for one. Times are up, but they aren't available for purchase. I guess the guys in charge of online presales don't really feel like it?

Every movie (no oscar buzz) fails commercially when it is sold by Del Toro's name. Can't see how this time will be different. If Scary Stories overperforms, I won't be surprised if budget is higher than it should be. I'm so tired of this deja vu. The guy deserves better.
