The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

I think this is happening to some degree. TROS+F2 might be pretty close in size to the CM+Endgame money sink from the first half of the year.

Also had Joker take a 300m (and counting) chomp out of the box office.  All adds up here and there.

Good news bad news time.  Good news is there were solid increases across almost all movies Bad news is the preview number still leans more to sub-1.5M, which would be not good, even if you consider the Fandango Early Access shows. (Get used to that feeling, because that's gonna be the theme for tonight)

I don't think Zombieland is a good comp. It seemed to have really bad walkups after previews started, or just severely overperformed here. But it crashed down to earth compared to Gemini Man and Terminator. I see this coming in on the lower end of the 1.61-1.91M range. Don't think the late walkups will be worse than Terminator because of Halloween. So, I'll go with 1.65M for today. And overall previews of 2.5M.

I was just about to ask a question about theater counts. I thought I recalled that after the BOM redesign fiasco someone said that The Numbers was now showing that. But I don't see that info anywhere (other than the daily box office chart.) Is there a link like BOM used to have that shows counts for the upcoming weekend?

Doctor Sleep is similarly looking pretty dead here in Seattle, and I would thought this would be a place for it would do well. Starting to think it'll struggle to hit $20M for the weekend.

Yeah, it's been selling really poorly around here too (and not looking much better tomorrow either). Kinda nutty to think this might open a few million lower than Pet Sematary did earlier this year.

Yeesh. I thought Last Christmas would play way better than that.

At least walk ins are really good. I have a feeling it will do better than what PS is saying bcos its not PS driven at all.

Update

Last Christmas Previews

AMC Prev - 498 shows 10238/63635 131428.67
Cin Prev - 8417/72163 $92193 (582 shows)

Still not enough to hit 1m previews but it portends well for the weekend. I wonder if it can hit high teens or more this weekend.

@keysersoze123 I am looking at doing the rest of Fandango theaters (non Cinemark and AMC). But the runtime is still very slow (7 seconds per show) so it would take like 15+ hours to run just for F2. Perhaps tracking only Regal would be more practical (although still quite slow).

Yes. 7 hours is too much. One way is pick a sample of theaters say 200 across different cities to get a diverse sample. I like drafthouse theaters as they are dominant outside NYC/LA/SF and generally do very well. May be few Drafthouse, regal and if possible few showcase/marcus but not all of them. Anything more than an hour is not practical.

Can you run multiple in parallel? Is it possible to spawn multiple Selenium instances. How about this. https://simpleprogrammer.com/parallel-testing-selenium-webdriver-automation-steroids/

I wonder what @Porthos or other regulars feel? We can ignore Sacremento for sure as he is there to cover it 🙂

Playing With Fire Previews.

AMC - 8705/91554 105529.02 (overall 762 shows)
CIN - 7620/93952 $81730 (773 shows)

AMC Increase not as good as Last Christmas but Cinemark did even better than Last Christmas did !!! Still numbers are too low. Unlike Last Christmas I am not expecting this to have a good OW. Most Probably sub 10m OW.

Remember, I only cover Thr previews I feel are going to hit more than 7m, so there's plenty of films that I don't as well as days I wouldn't be looking at.

Also kinda thinking of maybe we might split this up between posters (not exactly volunteering, BTW).  Though I am more than a little worried that Fandango might view multiple people scraping as something akin to a DDoS, so I'm a little wary here.

Hmm I will take a look at that. Although it is beyond my current programming skills but it might be an interesting project to learn. For now I will attempt to use Splash and if that fails then I will try to reduce to a representative sample.
