The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

the comp increased................

The reviews certainly gave it a nice boost. I'm fairly confident that most of the increases I count are from the day before, tickets sold in the afternoon/evening, but the reviews gave sales a boost earlier in the day.

Before I post today's numbers, I wanted to get some opinions.   There are two showings that have been marked as Sold Out since I started pulling BW sales.  Because of the social distancing rules that were in effect at that time, I had been using an approximation of 65% of auditorium capacity as tickets sold.  As of this morning, both of these showings are available and appear to have no tickets sold.  I feel like I should back out the numbers from previous posts, but I didn't want it to look shady.  Is this something that people have seen in the past?  How do others handle sell-outs?

Another unrelated question: would it be helpful to have these broken down further by format?

I don't know if my eye-count-method (I only do eye-counts) is helpful to you but this problem with sell-outs that may be real or not appears to me every week:
If I see that a show is "almost full" I write down the number of sold tickets and the time and if it's indeed a sell-out the next day I take the last number and add just 1 seat, e.g. the number was 25 and the next day (a sell-out is reported) I report 26+.
The second possibility is that a sell-out is reported days before the release which is often not true and normally vanishes on Wednesday or Thursday. In this case I count just zero seats. I always take the worst case scenario.

Since I'm still awake ;)...
Zola, counted a few minutes ago for June 30:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): - (no showtimes so far)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24):
6 (3 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 0 (4 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9):
- (no showtimes so far )
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11):
0 (3 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): 45 (3 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal):
63 (3 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 5 theaters: 114

Hard to find good comps for a limited release with good reviews but probably not much marketing: Blinded by the Light (4.3M OW, 2.307 theaters) had 85 sold tickets on Thursday for Friday in the same 5 theaters.
The Art of Racing in the Rain (
8.1M OW, 2.765 theaters, not too well liked by the critics but the audience as it seems) had in the same 5 theaters on Thursday 76 sold tickets for Thursday and 123 sold tickets for Friday.

After raising the bar on what a movie can open to during the pandemic with F9‘s $70M weekend, Universal is adding a one-two wide release punch to the weekend with the debut of two titles geared at two different demos: DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby: Family Business which is set to do $15M+ and Blumhouse’s The Forever Purge which is looking at $10M+ over 3-days.

Together with the second weekend of the studio’s F9which is speeding toward another $28M (-60%), all three movies will not only own the top three spots at the B.O. for Uni, but bring the studio a weekend of $53M+.

All a bit too low IMO but let's see.

Seems okay so far, though all three comps, especially the first two, had pretty radical jumps from day to day, so it's best to wait until Thursday to say anything definitive.

So obviously things are hard to track bc I'm only looking at one day for Boss Baby and two days for the others, and this isn't a movie that would have a strong Thursday anyways. But this jump is a real rough one. But hey, still two more days left of action

Thought the review bump would be a bit bigger, but it's still a high either way and the film is still doing very well in the comps department. Can't complain too much at this point.

The Boss Baby 2, counted today at 11am EST for Friday:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): - (still no showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24):
5 (8 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 14 (8 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9):
13 (4 showtimes)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11):
4 (4 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): 45 (9 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal):
59 (8 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 6 theaters: 140.

Up 141% since Monday.
Comps: Dolittle (21.8M) had on Wednesday of its release week in the same 6 theaters 212 sold tickets for Friday.
I don't remember the exact number of Peter Rabbit 2 (10.1M OW) on Wednesday but TBB2 sold ca. twice as many tickets.
Would mean - with similar walk-ups - an OW between 15M and 20M at the moment.

The Forever Purge, counted today at 11am EST for Thursday:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 52 (4 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24):
12 (3 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 7 (2 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): 2
 (1 showtime)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 4
 (2 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): 23 (3 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 68
 (6 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 168.

Up 62% since Monday.
Comps (always from the same day = Wednesday): The Conjuring 3 (24.1M OW) had in the same 7 theaters 1.047 sold tickets for Friday.
AQP II (47.5M OW) had in the same 7 theaters 1.209 sold tickets for its previews on Thursday.
Crawl (12.0M OW) had in the same 7 theaters 195 sold tickets for Thursday.
The Boy II (5.8M OW) had in 6 theaters (Austin was missing) 56 sold tickets (so vs 166 here) for Thursday.
Scary Stories (20.9M OW) had in the same 7 theaters 542 sold tickets for Thursday.
The Invisible Man (28.2M OW) had in the same 7 theaters 628 sold tickets for Thursday.
And Countdown
(8.9M OW) had in 6 theaters (NY was missing) 127 sold tickets (so vs 116 here) for Thursday.

I also guess this is a film for walk-ups but they are needed.

Looking ahead, Escape Room 2 tickets go on sale tomorrow.   Space Jam is already on sale but I don't see any Thursday showings; is it not doing previews?

Warner/Max movies don't do previews. Even In the Heights still dropped on Max on the Thursday it opened.

Thanks for letting me know about Space Jam btw. Planning on doing a long-term tracking of that, though I might wait until tomorrow when I'm finished with Boss Baby and Purge.
