My dad who is in his 60s wants to see Matrix. Everyone in younger demos though talking Spider-Man. I think Matrix skews to an ancient decrepit practically-at-the-end-of-their-life-already  demo like 26 and up mostly, and well the older you get, the less likely you are to go to the theater based off current moviegoing habits

Sunday came in at $64.23M officially, which would adjust the Monday comp to $34.68M or so. So far tonight, our only update is from EC who said "around $36M" but also to not take his word on that yet and he'd look into it further. If it is $36M, then we need to adjust the comp up about 5% for Tuesday. We will know more once we have official numbers. I'm not sure how much "Discount Tuesday" is still a thing, but I expect Tuesday to be basically flat from Monday +/- 3%

EDIT: Actuals will come in right around ~$37.1M. Expecting between a 2% gain to a 5% drop from Monday.

Spider-Man: No Way Home Current Number, 24 Screen Theater, 8PM - December 20, 2021

Counting for Tuesday - December 21, 2021

38 show times, 1409 tickets sold

Comp to NWH 1st Monday (Actuals $37.1M)

+2.10% with no adjustment

$37.89M

We don't yet have an update on Tuesday's number but here's everything else. The drop in presales was precipitous at over 40% but I'm sure the actuals won't drop that much. Whatever Tuesday ends up being, I expect a 15-20% drop for Wednesday since it has to give up some decent real estate to Matrix Resurrection and Sing 2.

Spider-Man: No Way Home Current Number, 24 Screen Theater, 8PM - December 21, 2021

Counting for Wednesday - December 22, 2021

29 show times, 811 tickets sold

Comp to NWH 1st Tuesday

-42.44% with no adjustment

$N/A

Ehh, that Encanto number honestly seems about right. The vaccine efficacy is about to kick in for a lot of kids by now, so it makes sense this could not be as affected by Omicron.

I messed up and forgot to post yesterday, though I did track that day and got about 18 sales. So don't worry about me forgetting. Comps are coming tomorrow, but they won't really mean much of anything this far off. *shrug*

1 more day of PS left. Let us see where it ends up.

Matrix Resurrections OD(PS END)

Horrible final day of PS. I think single digit OD would be BAD but looking inevitable at this point.

Sub-$30M 5 day opening for Matrix 4 (closer to 20 TBH) followed by a classic HBO Max 70% drop (even 80% is possible considering how divisive and polarizing the Wachowskis usually are) sounds about right to me. Spidey (even with all the Deathly Hallows-style overloading Jatinder is expecting) is going to choke December to death, with Sing 2 making do with the leftovers.

Ultimately it's just a lack of interest. No one ever asked for a fourth Matrix movie, and the Wachowski's didn't want to make it until they lost their parents and Lana decided to make this as a way to cope with that. I highly doubt she gives a shit about box office prospects.

Yeah, I'm sure it's just a lack of interest and has nothing to do with the film releasing 3 days after the 2nd biggest opener of all time (that goes for almost the same demo).

I think sylvester’s post is really hyperbolic, but this is not much of an excuse either when Sing looks to do waaaaay more on the exact same date.

Nah, it still works. A sequel to a 2016 kids film has way less in common than nostalgia sequels to huge 2000s franchises. And Matrix is on streaming, while Sing 2 isn't. Matrix 4's biggest audience is more likely to have seen Spider-man than Sing 2's and are more likely to stay home than go to the cinema again (espescially since they can watch the film at home).

To be fair, Sing 2 is the big animated movie for kids this Christmas and movies that are family-friendly, which is also obviously true of Spider-Man as well (and obviously nonexistent in the case of the R-rated Matrix), tend to flourish the most at this time of year the begin with. What was the last R-rated movie to truly break out around Christmas? The Wolf of Wall Street and Django the year before that (Leo, his power)?

Who tf are these parents that are taking their kids to watch Sing 2 even with this Omicron scare and everything?

For the love of everything, Omicorn and Covid in general is almost no risk to even a remotely healthy kid.
