Arrival was a suprise that had a low OW due to a lack of awareness

BR49 is closer to a fanboy franchise and will be frontloaded.

Arrival's budget was also much smaller, and its opening weekend met tracking numbers as well.

Victoria and Abdul had a stronger performance than I was expecting. Focus would be wise to take it a bit wider in the coming weeks.

For a film marketed at the art house crowd with such a middling reception from critics, V&A is performing better than almost anyone could have expected. After IT, V&A might have the most surprising run of any film released in September. It seems likely to outgross the far more high profile Battle of the Sexes, which would be quite a feat.

I doubt anyone here has seen the film but if so, what did you think of it? What sort of crowd is it attracting?

Wonder Woman and IT are head and shoulders above every other film this year for me.

But I also really liked Hidden Figures, Get Out, Girls Trip, Rough Night, Kong Skull Island, Logan, Trainspotting 2, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Annabelle Creation.

Worst: Bye Bye Man, Resident Evil, Baywatch, Fences and the absolute worst is A Cure for Wellness.

As far as major films from big studios, to me, the best were Wonder Woman, It, Fences, and Get Out. The worst were Rough Night Baywatch,  and Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Haven't watched A Cure For Wellness or BBM.

As far as the "Fury Road" and "Tron: Legacy" comparisons for 2049.   "Fury Road" has summer weekdays and "Legacy" had the Holidays.   This is just an October release.  Yes October Sci-Fi has been killing the last few years but those were both "PG13" (Gravity and The Martian).  "R-rated" films have always had a more limited audience than PG13, that's just facts.  The budget is what makes this seems like it's under-performing and also with it not making what "Covenant" did 6 months ago. (Covenant budget was much more in line too).   Yes previous expectations for "2049" were about 45-55 range so it's fair to say it came in below expectations.  With that said, "Blade Runner" IS NOT a Blockbuster Franchise and never has been.   Some could argue neither was "Mad Max" and that's fair push back but you can't deny Summer helped "Mad Max" a lot.  Plus Mad Max was a trilogy so I think the fanbase was much larger than "Blade Runner".

After a 9.65 weekend IT is 20.1 away from SUICIDE SQUAD. That's ~2.1x the weekend more and will happen.

This SQUAD 5th weekend onward (it was Labor Day 4-day).

Sep 2–4 2 $9,910,256 -19.1% 3,292 -290 $3,010 $297,327,572 5
Sep 2–5 2 $12,687,021 +3.6% 3,292 -290 $3,854 $300,104,337 5
Sep 9–11 4 $5,723,038 -42.3% 3,103 -189 $1,844 $307,480,891 6
Sep 16–18 7 $4,701,834 -17.8% 2,740 -363 $1,716 $313,774,166 7
Sep 23–25 8 $3,108,351 -33.9% 2,172 -568 $1,431 $318,131,694 8
Sep 30–Oct 2 11 $1,917,283 -38.3% 1,638 -534 $1,171 $320,857,912 9
Oct 7–9 12 $1,123,640 -41.4% 972 -666 $1,156 $322,547,564 10
Oct 14–16 15 $716,073 -36.3% 630 -342 $1,137 $323,676,752 11
Oct 21–23 20 $385,211 -46.2% 383 -247 $1,006 $324,271,174 12
Oct 28–30 24 $282,639 -26.6% 332 -51 $851 $324,673,191 13
Nov 4–6 25 $246,363 -12.8% 245 -87 $1,006 $325,021,779 14

Notice how IT's current 5th weekend cume of 305 is closer to SQUAD's 6th weekend cume of 307.5, and so BVS's 330 could go down too.

IT over BVS...let that fucking sink in WB :ohmygod:

It's decent, I thought it was a bit twee at times but it has a great cast and a mix of humour and sadness. The audience I saw the film with was middle aged to old.

Did you like it?

Would you recommend it? All I remember is that the trailer was (imo) beautiful and creepy as fuck.

I thought the concept is somewhat similar to that of Get out, and although it was not quite as well executed, it was still a pretty good film overall, parts of it were hauntingly beautiful. I think it is definitely one of those cases where a movie is treated completely unfairly by the critics, partly because of that, it never got a chance with general audiences either. This always happen with original properties too, frustrating...
