Top Gun was originally supposed to be out in 2019, they are delaying it for years now so there's simple no room anymore to keep pushing further, it's the same situation of NTTD.

 

And marketing wise, this movie already have 2 full trailers and a SuperBowl ad released, make sense to not release another trailer 3 months before release or they will have to drop a fourth trailer by October - Early November. We're probably getting a third final trailer a month before or so starting the last marketing push.

2 other options,

Fantastic setting (really common in video game and movies).

Again themselves like in Stealth and be about the disparation of the real pilot against drone and having real human needing to take them down because they got hacked by unknown force but hinting has Russian.

 

In the first one they went with the fantastic world with a made up unclear country that represented in audience mind clearly the socialism block, it could similar now:

Literally two days ago, my parents were asking me when Top Gun 2 was coming out. It's the one movie they're both excited about. Gonna be fun when I tell them it got delayed again lol

Paramount have no further releases this year I think. They just vacated 2021 fully.

I mean good for them claiming Memorial Day weekend but this was shot in 2018 and began promotion in 2019. It's gonna feel dated by the time it comes out.

I had this same experience with older coworkers.

 

This is the one big move I'm actually in favor of. Top Gun is a summer movie, and Memorial Day is a great date for it. This is not a holiday film. It can do 100 million OW there.

Just looked up the original release date for this was July 12, 2019 (between Spider-Man: Far From Home and The Lion King) when filming began in May 2018 (it was first pushed back a year for a longer post-production period). Eat your heart out, New Mutants!
