The dude has made some unreal films.. E.T, Jaws, Jurassic Park (stole the job from Jim), Raiders, Saving Private Ryan, Schindlers List. Then some not as popular ones which I loved like War of the Worlds and A.I.

His ability to pump out decent films over decades consistently is what sets him apart, I don't doubt that Jim could have done something similar but it's just not the route he wanted or chose.

The only objective measure of greatness though is $$$, after 4 more Avatars, Jim will be the highest grossing director of all time, averaging 3x more $$$ per film than Spielberg.

Does that mean that Michael Bay is one of the greatest of all time and Stanley Kubrick sucked?

Kubrick, Hitchcock, Welles, Wilder, Scorsese, none of them understood that their best bid for greatness was to make sci-fi action extravaganzas from the 1990s on

I have not read the whole thread, so I do not know if this has been said, but after this weekend Jumanji has ranked #1 last 5 weekends. The last film which did it was Avatar (7 weekends). Both films are the only two which have done it along this century...

It has nearly reached x10 multiplier.

The $11m figure of its 7th weekend is the the same amount than the 7th weekend of TFA, The Sixth Sense, E.T or Forrest Gump. Of course, using unadjusted figures. But I still think is remarkable.

I am absolutely amazed with this run.

Actually that is a hideous, and completely inaccurate, measure of greatness. $$$ is a measure of nothing more than popularity, and as each year ticks by popularity can be more an more manipulated by marketing and the perpetual dumbing down of entertainment audiences.

Populist arguments are instantly, easily destroyed. Britney Spears, a woman with absolutely zero musical talent and a completely manufactured catalog, has sold more records globally than Bjork, Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin, Tori Amos, PJ Harvey and Joan Baez combined. Is Britney a greater artist than any of them or all of them combined? No.

Jumanji and The Greatest Showman continue to be unstoppable. I'm pretty sure the last movie to be #1 in its 7th week was Avatar?

Winchester did as well as it was ever going to do, I guess.

Excellent holds across the board for the Oscar fare (except The Post).

Death Cure unseated them the past weekend tho. Still, what Jumanji is achieving is remarkable.

Chaplin, Jean Renoir,  John Ford, David Lean, Michael Curtis, William Wyler, George Cukor, James Whale, Ernst Lubitsch, Tod Browning, Sam Wood, plus those that Jake Gattis mentioned are never considered for "greatest director" status. It's always Cameron, Spielberg or Nolan. I think all 3 are incredible directors(particularly Spielberg, who does belong among the greats). But we need to see if these newer directors stand the test of time among those that have come before. I encourage people here to watch CITY LIGHTS, GRAND ILLUSION, THE RULES OF THE GAME, TROUBLE IN PARADISE, THE WOMEN, GREAT EXPECTATIONS, LOVE ME TONIGHT, THE OLD DARK HOUSE. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with what you see. Not too many explosions, but lots of great acting, stories, dialogue and wit.
