amazing her Star Wars films are so average after so many good films

well I mean one of her last films before her Star Wars reign was The Last Airbender so if anything she's improved greatly.

Hmmm, yeah ... that ain't happenin'.  Even if you want to discount the vast majority of hit films she has under her belt as producer as simply a by-product of her long association with Spielberg and her husband Frank Marshall, the successes at Lucasfilm under her tenure alone has her in a position to eat an outright flop and hold on to her job with ease.

People are talking about Kennedy situation like it's JUST about Solo. Those doing that are either naive or disingenuous. That's another problem in a list of controversial happening in the Lucasfilm Ranch.

The idea that Solo wasn't marketed is beyond absurd. It had a huge marketing campaign. Not enough people wanted to see it and the reviews weren't good enough to change minds.

It wasn't like the December Star Wars movies though. I've only seen the trailer for it once and otherwise only the usual stuff you see at the cinemas. But then, I don't watch TV and I use adblock so...

There wasn't a trailer for solo until February. 3 months before release. Did everyone forget? There was marketing but it was lackluster in comparison to other blockbusters of this caliber.

Heh. Random thought that they scheduled Solo so close to TLJ to hedge their bets. Both will fall in the same fiscal year, better than having risky Solo off on its own year.

Probably doesn't matter at the Disney corporate level, but for a Lucasfilm annual evaluation it might.

Exactly. Another reason that several here pointed out that they should move to December. Not a SINGLE film on the calendar there would stay. Not Aquaman, Spider-Man, Bumblebee. Nothing. But Kennedy got stubborn.

Kathleen Kennedy isn't going anywhere but definitely she'll be on short notice from Bob Iger and Alan Horn after this. If Disney wasn't too concerned with the production problems on the Star Wars films so far they definitely will be after this.

That's a good take. But I wouldn't be surprised if Kennedy voluntarily steps down.

Huh, didn't know we were having a wake for Kennedy's career already.

Welcome to BOT, the place where hyperbole reigns supreme. It's weird.

I wish Solo were doing better though, the movie was nice.

I see the BOT overreaction squad is out is full force.

This is is an awful result, but things will be smooth sailing for Kennedy unless IX demonstrates that the brand damage affects main episodes to a serious degree (which I think is quite possible, but far from guaranteed).

Oh so it's possible she already had a history with not understanding why people are drawn to the property they're adapting and alienating those fans that are the very reason you thought making the adaptation was a good idea to begin with? Interesting..

No but seriously though, I've noticed that studios have this thing they like to do where they will buy film rights to some breakout IP, then indicate that they either don't know or don't understand why it was successful in the first place. The first time I realized it was when Percy Jackson was adapted and they made it into even more of a Harry Potter ripoff than it already was. You thought it was a good idea to buy rights to the thing because there was already a built in, practically guaranteed audience. How does it make sense to spit in that audience's faces and do what you think would be successful? If you don't believe it's accessible enough as is, what's the point of even buying it? Just make your own shit with its own name.

ah yes, the other problem is a few YouTubers who haven’t shaved or showered in 3 weeks, have a large assortment of Star Wars merchandise in the background, and have 20k subs are making videos about how Kathleen Kennedy and Rian Johnson are cucks that killed their childhood

I did some research and tried to watch that shit.

they were truly upset that a woman had purple hair in episode 8.

I don't know how much various ad spaces cost, or really much about advertising at all tbh. Though if this is a significant amount on marketing, we are then left with even fewer reasons the movie is failing besides TLJ response and general interest being low.

It would be giant for a regular movie, for a Star wars movie not so much (and a lot of it is done via deal with partners) and it was a bit compressed with being close to Last Jedi release like this, marketing started late for sure.

The low quality of the marketing is a good reason for how low it got I think more so than volume, but that has to also do with what marketer had to work with, if a lot of market respond in the same way it is hard to blame a particular strategy used in some place, there is usually a general unattractive proposition.

But even if it started late, it still had a superbowl trailer that deliver a lackluster response, change it for a trailer that get a good response with a movie people understand the goal of the hero, sell young Solo has something interesting and sell an arc from young Solo to what we get in a New Hope (like Casino Royale did for Bond) and maybe you have a different story at least domestic and some key market.

If Solo had been released in December, it would have been massacred by Aquaman and co.
Rival studios aren't afraid of this franchise anymore. Look what Jumanji did competing against Jedi... GA prefers to watch more appealing films instead of "for fans" movies like Solo.
