Wednesday's Numbers

Recommended Posts

47 minutes ago, grim22 said:

What must the attendance difference between Tuesday and Wednesday look like? Cheap tickets and 40%+ falls means the attendance must be like 60-75% higher on Tuesday compared to Wednesday. That is almost opening weekend level attendance for movies on their first Tuesday. Kind of crazy how big a box office force Cheap Tuesdays have become.

It's even bigger b/c some locals (like my Cinemark) have raised 1st matinee show rates to $7/show this summer, BUT dropped Tuesday shows to $5/show (to match AMC)...it used to be those prices were both $6, so it does seem that folks without passes (and with families) will flee to the cheapest day to watch movies they want...

PS - I'm doing it next week - turned my nearly expiring $5 Fandango reward codes into 6 tickets to Incredibles 2 for $9.  Any other day/showing would have been an extra $12 minimum (if the early show) and much more if not (like $30-$50)...and funny enough, this is the 1st movie my kids will go to all year (and I've bought the tickets already b/c they care about their seats and my local cheap Tuesday theater sells out every prime time Tuesday showing, sometimes by Saturday - but when its $5 vs $7 1st showing or $11 matinee or $14 for normal primetime, it's a no-brainer to go Tuesday)...

It's an effect of no family movie passes...the effect will decrease if anyone ever makes a family subscription plan...I mean, check out HT3's drop from yesterday to today...

The effect is exacerbated by Summer Tuesdays not being school days. So a portion of the demand from the weekend moves to the weekdays, particularly Tuesday for the discount. Parents with kids in particular benefit from the discount rate than just a single individual buying one ticket would. At least this is what I think is happening.

98% of the general public wouldn't know if 700 million is good or bad for Black Panther (and don't care). I told my wife last week that Avengers 3 was going to come up short of 700 million and she said "I guess they won't make another one."

It generally seems to be large AMC theaters picking it up for one show per day late at night. This is Disney’s way of trying to get it over 700M. When Sony was trying to get Spectre over 200, theaters only showed it once per day for one of Sony’s fudge attempts.

So the exact same thing then lol

Under Solo? :whosad:

Well, since opening Saturday or so catching Solo was pretty unlikely. Weekdays have gone pretty well since then, 2nd weekend not so much. Getting within 5M of Solo would be really solid late legs.

Few, that's why what largely will happen is some receipt money from I2 will find it's way to BP cause I2 is likely to hit $600m itself. And if that stalls just short they will take money from Christopher Robin to get it there.

Couldn't they do that directly then instead of bothering with a re-expansion as well?

I was looking for a way to put Unfriended 2 below 5 million in the derby.  Forgot that Sorry to Bother You was expanding as it should compete with similar audiences.

I put these for Unfriended and Purge in the derby, and the $PTA difference looks reasonable,

5.00 - Unfriended - $3,234

4.85 - Purge 4- $2,081

Sorry to Bother You averaged $5,228 last weekend, and I think it can do 3.4 million and $3,238 average.

3.40 - Sorry to Bother You - $3,238

When comparing to everything else, Unfriended is going to need a lot of walkups or something to get close to 5 million.

36.50 - Mamma Mia - $11,003 (w/o previews)

24.83 - Equalizer 2 - $7,328 (w/o previews)

23.50 - Hotel T 3 - $5,507

16.00 - Ant-Man - $4,235

12.50 - Skyscraper - $3,271

10.60 - Incredibles - $3,350

10.60 - Jurassic World - $3,141

4.64 - Unfriended 2 - $3,000 (w/o previews)

4.85 - The Purge 4 - $2,081

3.40 - Sorry to Bother You - $3,238

2.40 - Sicario 2 - $1,657

2.00 - Uncle Drew - $1,617

1.55 - Ocean's 8 - $1,547

1.50 - Neighbor - $2,058

if Unfriended only gets to around $2,100 PTA instead, ….. 3.25m weekend.
