John Wick: Chapter 4 | March 24, 2023 | RIP Lance Reddick

Recommended Posts

The action sequences were getting a bit repetitive for me. Less is more, guys. After the 764th take down, it all started to blur together, especially when you consider the previous 3 movies - and when you look at how creative and diverse the action is in the first act of the third one, I can't help but feel a bit let down. Berlin sequence could have been trimmed or cut altogether, making for a tighter film without overly-impacting the story (a simpler solution to his problem could have been found - this literally was an open-world action RPG side quest, further reinforcing my idea that this series should have been reworked into an Assassin's Creed franchise).

There was also one character whose entire existence I still don't understand. I don't get what the point of him was, and I definitely think he was completely unnecessary. The whole time I was waiting for a reveal of a deeper backstory, tying into John, but, nope. Guess he was just there cause dogs are now expected to be part of the series? Especially when Donnie Yen was so good and you had that personal relationship, I don't understand why they added one more character just for the hell of it. Again - less is more.

BUT...the Paris part was mostly outstanding, and definitely worth the price of admission alone.

8/10. The third movie remains my favourite because - despite a week middle part (just like here), the third act is close to Chapter 4's (the best third act of any of the movies), and its opening is just outstanding.

All I want is for Chad Stahelski to direct The Brave And The Bold. Want me some of that good action direction and fight choreography for Batman.

Top 7 non superhero action movies ever in history of hollywood

Mad Max Fury Road

Terminator 2

Die Hard

Top Gun Maverick

John Wick 4

Matrix 1

MI: Fallout

What abour the first Predator? Speed? The Bourne Ultimatum? Casino Royale?

I've seen it last Wednesday. 6/10 - the worst JW for me. It's more of the same, but with worse script and more indestructible main hero (John was hitted by the car couple of times, he jumps from the 3rd floor and he doesn't have even smallest wound, while in JW 1-3 he was injured multiple times, in JW3 he was stubbed in the very first fight scene in NY Library). Cinematography and choreagraphy was great, but nothing better than already amazing in JW2-JW3.

Really enjoyed this, didn’t feel like nearly 3 hours at all, although admittedly it did slow down a bit in Berlin, but it was worth it for that hilarious rave scene where everyone just seemed to be vibing with the gunshots.

The Paris part was excellent from start to finish, loved the steps part.

I’d be happy for this to be the end though, I can’t really see how they’d top themselves here.

Spoiler

It also ends pretty perfectly and it’d be a shame to undo it, although given the Lionsgate people’s comments I’m guessing the ending will end up being a fake out.

Saw it again last night, even better. Crowd is always super reactive to it, makes for a fun experience.

I can't believe they're doing that ballerina movie with Len Wiseman (???) as their first spinoff instead of God Donnie Yen vs Rina Sawayama

Spoiler

I can’t help but feel like the Donnie Yen Vs Rina Sawayama film is potentially set up for JW5. The way it cuts to black before we see a death makes me think that John may intervene in some way. That’s of course assuming they actually do JW5, but given Keanu and Chad’s comments, combined with the head of Lionsgate’s wish for more with Keanu, it’d make sense.

I would obvs never in a million years oppose a Wick 5 with Keanu IF Chad is directing but I'd rather not...perfect ending. Also no way Caine would die to that knife, Wick intervention or no.

Yeah the only way I’d be open to them doing a fifth film is if Chad was directing again. You’d hope that if they did undo the ending of 4 (which I agree is a perfect and well earned ending), it’d be because they have a genuinely good story idea. If they don’t have a good reason to bring him back, I’d hope they don’t do it.

Caine definitely seemed to sense that something was awry in that post credits scene. I would love to see more of Donnie Yen’s character in a spin off, he was an absolute badass here. I love how Hollywood has to keep blinding him to make the fight scenes seem fair! 😂

Rina delivered :)

Some of the action scenes were incredible. Amazing 3rd act. Real locations, proper sets. Beautifully shot.

Cons: it’s too long and sags in the middle, the club scene (those dancers wouldn’t keep dancing lol), and it’s a sausage party (2 female characters).

I found it hilarious that they kept dancing 😂 it does slow down a bit in the middle but that bit and Scott Adkins hamming it up was worth it for me.

Thats scene is set in a Berlin dance club.

Believe me.

They would keep dancing. That scene is realistic. If anything, it missed a clearer depiction of drug misuse and alcohol excess.

He was good, but there was so many continuity errors with the dancers it distracted me.

I’ve been to several Berlin nightclubs and none were like this lol. I think this is an American guys depiction of what he thinks Berlin clubs are like. Also none of them appeared to actually be having drinks.

At first I thought it looked cool, then it just started annoying me. Far too staged, choreographed and unrealistic with too many continuity errors. Took me out of the film anyway, but thankfully not for long.

Only a minor thing anyway, still loved the film as a whole.

Thats fair, i should have added the context that we germans love to make fun of Berlin 😄 the scene wasnt bothering me too much i think because in the other John Wick films (especially 2 and 3) you also had many scenes were the civilians seemingly didnt care or notice that dozens of people around them were murdered. It seems like a running joke to me at this point with the Berlin dance club scene as a sort of tip of the iceberg.
