Even if Phillips/Phoenix cost a lot more this time around (and throw in Lada Gaga) I still don't see how a movie that's likely going to be in rooms with very little action set pieces is costing $200M.  

 

But I think it will be profitable regardless.

I don't see this being a flop at all. But I'm struggling to understand why it cost 3.5x  more than the first movie.

Phoenix and Gaga paychecks alone are already half the budget of the first film's ~$70M. So, yea.

Budget is too big. Look at how big Barbie was, they build an entire plastic Barbie world along with including song and dance numbers and that was only $150m.

 

Or could just be Gerwig didn't overspend like Todd Phillips.

Gerwig probably learned good habits doing small scale films like "Ladybird" and resisted the urge to go crazy when she got a big budget for the firs time, which a lot of directors succumb to.

Normally I would agree I can't see this costing more then a 150 Millin, but I don't think WB has to worry about getting it's money bakc with this one.

As someone else said, If this is indeed a musical, then they will lose the men audience from the first movie. Yes, musicals have been successful in the past, but they are usually family friendly aimed at mostly women. The first Joker was big with men and incels

I think THR reported it was 100 mln at the time. He exchanged his upfront salary for a big percentage, he did the same thing on Hangover trilogy.
