Speaking of A24, why didn't they give Marcel the Shell a bigger release than they did?

Per-theater-averages were getting lousy in the theaters it was already in. Probably didn't think it was worth expanding any further.

Worth noting that Bodies this weekend is only going semi-wide, something in 1000-1300 location range I believe. That may skew the comps with full wide/national releases, since it will be more top heavy in terms of market performance. If you have EEAAO sales from its 4/08 expansion, might be worth adding to comp list for scale (also from A24 so the market distribution should be similar)

Started tracking that at T-1 so I can add tomorrow

Septembers for 2016-2019 averaged out to $660m, looking at next month I have a hard time seeing more than $300m which would be 45%. January was worse with 41% and you have to go back to June 2021 to get a lower percentage.

(guessing $500m for Aug and $300m for Sept here)

At the Regal IMAX near me, ET and BT are alternating the four IMAX showtimes this weekend. TGM did add a couple of showtimes in the Screen X theater.

At the AMC Dolby, TGM added the 12:00pm showing while BT kept the other three showtimes.

I'm guessing TGM drops less than 10% this weekend. Were it not for ET, I suspect it would have added some IMAX showtimes this weekend and likely would have increased over this past weekend.

Top Gun is adding some PLF shows for the afternoon near me this weekend. I'm guessing it'll be the movie that gets them during the day the weekend of August 26 since it looks like The Invitation will only be getting those screens after 7:00.

I know some people are probably confused why I'm wasting my time with this. Well frankly, I don't think any of this weekend's new releases will get previews reported. But I wanted to do this movie (and also the Jaws re-release) only so the upcoming Avatar re-release can have some good comps. It feels weird to compare a re-release with new movies, so this and Jaws feel right, albeit somewhat imperfect. Plus this only takes about 15 minutes to work on, so not a big waste of time.

A movie about an alien who gets trapped on earth, befriends some kids, and eats Reeces Pieces? Ehhhh, what a weak concept it won't catch on.......

Is anyone else having issues with the Fandango app? It's only showing one or two theaters per city for every movie now.  Hopefully it's just a bug

I think this film can become highest grosser of all time even though pre-sales are low.

Yeah, I’m seeing the same, for future days, where it’s just showing 1 or 2 theaters. But for today’s shows, all locations are listed. Weird …

I guess WOM might help it out a bit in that regard, maybe it gets from Star Wars fanbase....

The august - October period I can see companies lean heavily towards streaming releases from this point on. It has never been a lucrative period and the one or two movies that break every 5 years  isn’t worth it.

Mack & Rita had today 16 sold tickets for tomorrow and 9 sold tickets for Friday (with showtimes in 3 of my 7 theaters).
Summering had today 5 sold tickets for tomorrow and 4 sold tickets for Friday, also with showtimes in only 3 theaters.
Sigh.

But also in my theaters we have a clear winner: E.T. has 509 sold tickets for tomorrow, August 11 (with IMAX shows in 4 of the 7 theaters).
Comps: Ghostbuster: Afterlife had on the same day, Wednesday of its release week, 1.221 sold tickets
and TGM had on Tuesday of its release week (= 1 day earlier) 2.864 sold tickets.

And for Friday, August 12, E.T. had today 422 sold tickets.
Comps (all counted on Wednesday for Friday): JC had 655 sold tickets,
Lightyear had 1.235 sold tickets,
Minions 2 had 2.018 sold tickets,
Sonic 2 had 1.484 sold tickets
and TGM had 3.549 sold tickets.

Beast had today 77 sold tickets for next Thursday and 39 sold tickets for next Friday (in 6 theaters).
Comps: Crawl (12.0M OW) had on Monday of its release week 105 sold tickets for Thursday and 87 sold tickets for Friday.
And 47 Meters Down: Uncaged (8.4M OW) had also on Monday of its release week 31 respectively 13 sold tickets in 4 theaters (but this movie had very good walk-ups).

September/October are no longer the uneventful months that they once were. October alone last year having four $40M+ openers in as many weeks (during an ongoing pandemic and with two of the movies being available to watch at home at the same time) is proof of that. Even early September got out of the dump zone when IT exploded five years ago.

The lack of surefire heavy-hitters is probably a concern for theaters, but not a death sentence. With the way non-superhero/non-sequel fare has been doing pretty well this year for the most part, hopefully the most buzzy non-franchise fall titles (The Woman King, Don't Worry Darling, Bros, Lyle Lyle Crocodile, Ticket to Paradise, etc.) are able to also capitalize on the healthy market and pull strong grosses.
