Why did Scream 4 gross so little?

11 years wasn't enough time for nostalgia for the property to develop and Weinstein was terrible at selling anything that wasn't an Oscar contender. Had Paramount (this movie's studio) or another major wrestled away the rights and given it a proper push, it likely would've seen numbers closer to what this one is pulling.

I wonder what an American Pie sequel can do now, a decade after American Reunion. That one also felt a bit too early for nostalgia to set in, but now is perfect and it's not like anyone from the cast really blew up and wouldn't come back for it.

To the above points, don’t forget Scream 4 and American Reunion basically performed on a level with their predecessors overseas. It was strictly an American underperformance. Strange.

Like 21-22 for NWH, still great. 5.5 seemed a little too good to be true.

Yeah, im expecting +80/-20 for 22M. with just little better Sat jump or better Sun hold or both, Sixth Sense weekend is still in play. Fantastic weekend hold no matter what.

Continues to gain on SW7, 83.5% on the weekend. Passing Avatar domestic looks very likely now.

Is there any sign of them potentially reopening later in Scream’s run?

That all depends on how willing businesses here are in taking a stand.  The climate here is getting quite hot here in terms of people being angry at the government.  Next to Australia, we have the most draconian and unfair restrictions and there's going to be a pretty big paradigm shift come Jan 23rd.  So stay tuned.  I don't have an answer for you, but after the 23rd, things may or may not be quite different.

SATURDAY AM UPDATE: Refresh for more analysis and chart…We can complain about Omicron, but I wouldn’t necessarily complain that the variant is spoiling the box office as Paramount/Spyglass Media’s Scream had a robust first day of $13.3M on its way to a $31.5M 3-day and $36M 4-day at 3,664 theaters. That 4-day beats Mama, the previous high opening for a horror movie over MLK, and overall Scream‘s 3-day isn’t far from its previous sequel opening highs, Scream 2 which did $32.9M back in 1997 and Scream 3 which made $34.7M back in 2000.

Scream received a B+ CinemaScore with PostTrak audiences giving it a 79% positive and a 61% recommend. The pic played best in the East, West, and South Central, with twenty locations we hear grossing a $25K+ first day, which is very good. Audience leaned 56% male, with close to 80% under 34 years old, indicating that the movie is appealing toward a younger generation. The largest demo was 25-34 year olds at 36%. Diversity draw was 38% Caucasian, 36% Latino and Hispanic, 14% Black, & 12% Asian/other.

Sony will be reporting their figures soon, but many see Spider-Man: No Way Home clicking past $705M after the holiday weekend, which would make it the 4th highest movie of all time at the domestic box office, besting Black Panther‘s $700M.

I'm still confused (all these years later) with Scream 4's domestic box office.  This opening however for the 5th is quite nice.  Yep, it's very frontloaded, like Twilight/Potter front loaded but if it were to follow Glass from 2019, it would flirt with 39 mill 4 day.

Whatever it ends up grossing for the domestic total will be a very nice improvement from the 4th.  And hopefully the WOM is good so maybe there is another installment.

25-34 year olds being the biggest age group at 36% makes sense in relation to nostalgia, that’s my demo. Nice diversity breakdown too.

I doubt Universal will try reviving American Pie on the big screen again, the original (while one of the better teen sex comedies) would obviously be a very different movie if it were made today vs. in 1999. If they do try to revive it with the same cast again it would likely be a Peacock original.

That's very good for Scream, which will likely have stronger legs than normal due to a barren January and no direct horror competition until the Foo Fighters horror film Studio 666 on Feb. 25th (unless Moonfall counts as horror which would honestly be a stretch).
