The Alien franchise was never about the gore, it always has been around the fear of the unknown, how scary the space and it's life forms can be, what un-godly creatures crawl between the planets and stars.

LMAO with anyone saying otherwise, if you want to see high-level gore galore just watch The Thing.

Yeah, first 3 Alien movies weren't very violent overall, they were about other things. Resurrection was the first Alien with grotesque and over the top gore and kills.

With these early ratings from the audience, I'm sure this will have at least decent legs.

For sure it's a revival from the franchise.

Yeah but when this film's ambitions begin and end at "Alien splatter film" and knowing Fede's past work. It was surprisingly tame.

Found this a major dissapointment and I was quite deflated walking out. Romulus is the first Alien film to truly make me feel nothing, it just...exists.

For the first time in the franchise, an Alien film has no ambition, no thematic ideas on it's mind, nor does anything new. It's just reheated leftovers. Probably my least fav in the series.

Very very bummed, even the bad ones before were at least interesting misfires. This one's just nothing sameness.

The thing that frustrates me is that people seem to like this when they didn’t like the last two movies. This feels very similar to them but worse in every regard. The characters even make equally stupid decisions here.

Nothing strange...people like this nostalgia stuff cause is instantly satisfactory but the effect then kinda disappear with the time.

See how star wars 7 was acclaimed against the prequels ...now i don't think it's controversial to say prequels tried something original at least are cult while the enthusiasm about the sequels is kinda gone.

I think this one is Rogue One of the franchise, giving audience one-time entertaining with new characters and event. And that’s why I don’t really believe studio will make it as a new beginning of a new storyline. Maybe we will see some characters back in potential future projects, but only a true bold Alien movie can bring new life the franchise really need to keep being active. No way Disney can keep making money from it by reusing familiar elements(even SW movies can’t make it).

(I actually even think Scott try to give an update on his unfinished Prometheus thread in this one. )

People love recycled shit even if they claim otherwise, they want every film in their favourite franchise to be just like films they loved, even if this film is not nearly as good as the ones they loved despite recycling the same elements, visuals, characters and lines.

*checks out “spectacular” RT for the first time. Average rating: 6.6*

to be fair I’m sure it’s fine. Happy for the franchise and god knows it needed it

How about 7.1 from all critics?

But that chest busting scene was disgusting and the most iconic scene in the entire franchise?

Am I blind? There was gore in the film...quite a decent amount of it. Not like Evil Dead, which makes sense.

But, some of y'all may be talking outta your asses. There was a scene or two where I was surprised they didn't show us, but I wasn't mad at it.

I will say...this film had some BEAUTIFUL scenes and shots. Like, it's maybe the prettiest film in the series outside of Prometheus?

I did think the production design was spectacular.

Sure there was gore. Just super tame and not nearly inventive enough given some of the fun, crunchy, disgusting stuff in the last 3. Gore here felt super synthetic for me. It was a yawn. Made me long for stuff like Event Horizon.

This was similar to the new Apes or even Prey for me. It's fine. It gets the job done. It's greatest accomplishment, like those two, especially Apes, being that I think the sequel could be much better and maybe carve out it's own voice. So I do hope Fede gets to do another. And, then, really cuts loose with it in doing so.

Yeah, this was a solid 6.5-7/10 for me. Decent characters, excellent production design, VFX (minus that one GLARING exception), and sound design. I just felt like it had no ambition. Even this "bonkers" 3rd act everyone was raving about felt...kinda perfunctory? It was over in like 10 minutes!

Thankfully the film was well paced and it's the first time I can say "I felt like I was playing a video game" as a compliment. Some great set pieces throughout. But I was much less scared throughout than I was expecting.

With an early 88% RT verified from 500+ reviewers, though...B+ CS incoming?

That’s kinda interesting tbh. It’s always fascinating to me to discover what type of reasons some people have to make movies.

I didn’t watched the movie so no need to argue about the movie specifically. Even tho i tend to roll my eyes to complains like “the movie doesn’t say anything”, because they always do if you have enough perspective to see though.

I really enjoyed this. I appreciate the non stop pace as well.

Practical sets. Production design. The score. Were all stand outs. It’s so refreshing not to see green screen environments these days. It all felt real.

It has some clunky dialogue and cheesy moments. And I could’ve done with not shying away from the gore as much, but I enjoyed it. Very accessible without thinking “is that a reference to something I should know about?” too.

Great production design and effects - mostly. One thing in particular just did NOT look good and was in fact distractingly bad. Wish they hadn't gone there.

One good character that was quite interesting, especially after the David movies. Appreciated the set up for the characters, but overall they were paper thin and while their motivation was good, there was nothing there beyond the main two characters.

Also, I was SHOCKED at how much of the franchise is actually in there. I was expecting this to be a direct follow-up to certain films, but everything in it is quite surprising - and pretty well done overall.

The finale was... hmmm. I'm not quite sure. It's been done before and I actually think it was done better. That sort of left not necessarily a bad taste, but definitely brought me down a bit after an overall fun ride. I need to rewatch it, but for now 6.5/10.

I don;t know, Alien back in 1979 was considered pretty extreme, the chest buster scene in particular.
