Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire | March 22, 2024

Does not matter for Ghostbusters fans.  The way they talk about critics you would think the 2016 film got 100% and Afterlife got 0%.  Nothing to gain from good reviews and comedies normally get bad reviews.

The problem with that strategy is only Ghostbuster fans will care and go. If the movie is good being radio silent to the last minute will do you no  favors with the GA. By the time WOM kicks in here comes G&K to crush any legs.

That means I will probably have fun with this then. Good deal.

I'd like to see this and GxK thrive and coexist but I don't know if that will happen.

Going kind of dramatic made more sense for the first, since it was going for a Stranger Things vibe, but...this one seems less focused on the kids, at least in the marketing, so why do they keep such a serious tone with all these comedy heavyweights?

Yeh from accounts I follow I’d say mixed to poor without seeking them out.

Empire, discussing film, Guardian, Bloody Disgusting all negative. Deadline, Variety and Screen Daily looked like they leaned positive though.

Can Sony ever make a critically acclaimed movie outside of spiderman? Its continuous misfire with critics is beyond belief. Even their BO success like uncharted and ABY weren’t a critical success.

Honestly, Ghostbusters is just past its time. The franchise is supposed to be a comedy that pivoted into nostalgia porn because your average 40 year old couldn't let go of Ecto Cooler and fun Halloween costumes in conjunction with unfunny installments, making a franchise no one really cares about.

I didn't realize that Jason Reitman jumped ship. Personally I don't see it doing well. The franchise doesn't do well internationally and the this one somehow looks even more nostalgia baity than the previous film and people are getting sick of the nostalgia bait.

I guess because people complained about how unfunny the reboot was, so Sony decided to stray as far away from it as possible?

Jason Reitman is making that SNL movie that'll presumably come out by the end of the year. Pretty sure no one can blame him for jumping ship from a franchise that clearly has a ceiling as to how much interest is actually there for it.

These movies would have done great in 2016 when people were high on nostalgia, while the 2016 film would probably do better today with audiences accepting fresh takes and being driven more by quality.
