That's good but what about capacity? Like will people come out in large numbers or there's still hesitancy? Otherwise it won't be helpful.

we don’t have any restriction now, cinema open 80%,the only concerned is that if people still afraid of the virus or not

China - $2.90M (limited)

Italy - $1.54M

Here in the Philippines that is the full opening day. Movies regularly open here on Wednesdays. I am seeing it on Sat night. One issue is there aren't a lot of high end cinemas here. The Black Panther showing I went to the screen was so dark I couldn't see anything during some of the evening scenes. So if people aren't wowed leaving the theater it might affect word of mouth here.

‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ Starts Offshore Rollout With Strong Early Numbers; China Covid & French Football Impactful, Long Game Afoot – International Box Office

James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water began its international box office rollout today in such majors as Korea, France, Germany and Italy — and with early sneaks in China. One of the most anticipated movies of recent years, it’s dominating play.

Some individual market grosses for opening day will come tomorrow, but for now we can report that Korea opened to $3.24M including midnights and with an 85% market share. This is lower than comps like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Avengers: Infinity War which also debuted on a Wednesday. However, as we have previously noted, the three-hour-plus runtime makes this appointment viewing for some — today was a workday in the market. The Naver score is 9.48 which is above both of the comps cited above.

In China, The Way of Water had been planned for 3,000 showings at 7pm local today, but ended up doing just 1,688 screenings per our information. This is a result of the ongoing Covid issues in the market where 73% of cinemas are open and there is a confidence issue amid the about-face from the government on the zero-Covid policy. The resultant sneaks, before official opening on Friday, were worth RMB 20M ($2.9M). We wrote yesterday that $100M was possible in China this opening weekend; we are now taking a more cautious stance, even if hope springs. Douban and Maoyan critical and social scores have not yet posted.

Elsewhere, The Way of Water was tops in its afternoon showings in France today, notching 79,000 admissions from 1,210 screens for $728K. Notably, numbers were good for dubbed versions which indicates family play. France has a mega distraction today in that we are playing Morocco in the World Cup semi-final this evening and that’s likely to impact, as we wrote yesterday, the later showings. (Anecdotally, in the parking lot of my local giant supermarket four hours before the match, it was impossible to find a spot as the whole of my area descended to stock up for the semis.)

In other parts of Asia, we hear that early indications are encouraging from Philippines and Thailand.

There is much more to come on this Disney/20th Century Studios sequel which notably adds Australia, Brazil and Mexico on Thursday ahead of the UK, Spain, and Japan on Friday — we’ll be following through the weekend.

Anecdotally there is room for optimism as my casual friends who don't usuallu go to cinemas plan to see it this weekend or next week when they have time.

The big problem for Avatar here is that every year Dec 25 to Jan 7 no foreign movies may be shown only local movies, the Governments way of supporting the local industry so Avatar won't play during the busiest times of the cinema. It will play until 24 and then come back to cinemas here on Jan 8

Any noteworthy film to watch during Metro Manila Film Festival?

Last Year, when Film Board didn't allow NWH to play during this period.. Didn't MMFF 2021 end up flopping with boycotts and empty theatre though it did surpassed 2020 Box Office?

Just curious if there is any film having of overtaking Maid in Malacañang (₱750M)

At this point under 2b feels like it'll happen for sure unless this legs out exceptional through the holidays. I'm going to give atleast a couple of weeks before I'm down to have the maverick convo though. Hopefully the legs are there.

More than anything, it's just a major bummer to end the year on a big disappointment, especially when so many other films already disappointed this year.

Hahaha this is just funny. We are not even through the weekend and you are saying 2B for sure is not happening.

When it does over 2B though it's because it had "exceptional legs".

Well yeah, because if you recall a couple pages ago we were talking about how merely average legs would take it over 2b. Merely average legs will not cut it now. Will need strong-great legs for that, which I still believe are possible FYI.

The film is well received and has the whole holidays to itself (in most markets, anyway). If people really want those premium good seats they have all the time in the world to get them. But it does need to leg out.

And...I mean, yeah, I'm not sure what is wrong to say if it does over 2B it will have had exceptional legs. Or a big pure weekend frame surge, I am fine with either to be frank. That's not an insult to the film, rather it should be the opposite?

Apologies if I sound too bummed or whatever. The way the expectations have crumbled over past few days is getting to me a bit mayhaps.
