Make sense that Top Gun and Avatar will be the biggest films of 2022 by a huge margin.

One is about duty and the other is about family

Both where made to please their fanbases as well.

Avatar told a strong environmetnal message in the context of the movie better then any recent hollywood film.

Take notes hollywood

‘AVATAR’ OFFERS DISNEY A SIMPLE LESSON ABOUT FILM FRANCHISES

I’m pretty sure it’s more that Avatar is a new franchise as opposed to doing anything different to any other.

Ridiculous article.

It’s also an utterly absurd slight at the biggest franchise in movie history, of which each film is still pulling in north of three quarters of a billion dollars nearing 40 films in.

You really can just write and publish any old drivel these days. Even in something like Variety. All about them clicks kids!!

one could argue the MCU trying to tell stories that are not connected to each other well as before is making it a mess vs phase 2 or 3?

Sure thing. Agree.
Avatar’s success isn’t some kind of lesson in how you build a franchise though. Which is what the article is staggeringly trying to argue.

Idk what full article is saying, but it’s not wrong to talk about MCU starting to show concerning signs. NWH can’t be counted bc its success was due to something entirely unrelated to the MCU. Everything else MCU post Endgame has been some level of underwhelming in performance. It’s not a good trajectory for the future at all.

I said it would take past Boxing Day to get a sense of this film’s trajectory.

I was wrong. I still have no idea and I’m not sure this weekend will even tell us.

This film’s run may end up looking a lot more like its predecessor’s than many of us thought possible.

A2 pocketing 3 daily records is more than I would have expected after OW, so that's good. Yesterday is probably the last one that can be reasonably expected since it'll be up against summer/holiday films for weekdays moving forward and unlikely to match the weekend numbers from the first.

Will Babylon and Whitney have gigantic theatre count drops from Thursday onwards? Or do you think cinemas will have to wait til the following weekend to really get rid?

I think this weekend there shouldn't be a big drop because only 1 movie is opening wide Megan, and there are plenty of other older movies doing less money... Then maybe the weekend after they could drop more...

Because studios dont give a shit about theatrical business anymore. Big Blockbusters are another story, but smaller movies like Puss in Boots apply to that.

A lot of potentially great movies this year already and I don't see any of these putting up particularly impressive numbers

Ferrari (Mann)

Oppenheimer (Nolan)

The Killer (Fincher)

Dune: Part Two (Villeneuve)

Napoleon (Scott)

Killers of the Flower Moon (Scorsese)

Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning

John Wick 4

Evil Dead Rise
