WGA/SAGAFTRA Strike Discussion Thread | SAG Ratifies Contract

What the fuck does Nolan's use of CGI have to do with either strike at hand?

I derailed the thread a bit and I apologize for that, but it started when we were talking about how this would be a good moment for VFX artists to unionize, despite being spread out across countries. It’s related in the sense that they are devalued and a VFX supervisor on Oppenheimer has been very outspoken about how devalued VFX artists are and how he wishes they could unionize and strike. Well him and the VFX twitter / threads community have been talking about that.

They're in a sticky position because studios can also outsource VFX work internationally for cheaper rates than the US

This is the sad truth. My friend works in animation: She was talking about how it went from outsourcing work to South Korea companies, only for them to realize their worth and charge more. So they started to outsource to Malaysian companies, only for them to realize their worth and charge more. Now they’re working with a different company, in a different country, and she’s like these people have no fucking clue what they’re doing, but they’re the cheapest rate, so we went with them.

I feel like we need to take a moment and appreciate Fran asking in her fiery speech: “What are we doing, moving around furniture on the Titanic?" All while Frances Fisher was standing not too far from her.

What a weird couple of months it's been for The Unsinkable Ship in pop culture.

I wonder what kind of products those asian companies have develop outside of American products.

While true to a point, a lot of tax breaks studios depend to fund the expensive movies have stipulations on using local labor and such.

At Marvel Studios, which has multiple films and TV shows in post-production, that’s an ethos studio head Kevin Feige and co-president Louis D’Esposito shared in an email to staff Thursday.

“We recognize how much you’ve all done on your specific projects and it’s disappointing when carefully laid plans have to shift, but constant change is the nature of the production business, and our teams are no stranger to unexpected challenges and rising to meet them,” Feige and D’Esposito wrote. “We deeply appreciate all your efforts to make the best of the situation, and we can all hope that a new agreement will be finalized soon so we can resume the great work we have in process.”

Disney really needs to find themselves a budget team because all these big time budgets for their movies are just not successful.

Indy 5 being close to 300 M budget was ridiculous as it is.

$212m over six episodes isn't that bad because it's cheaper than recent MCU films in terms of hours.

House of the Dragon Season 1 was $200m for 10 episodes.

Lost cost about $88 million a season to make: about 22 episode seasons. Large cast, on location shooting, actually paid residuals...

2004 - 2010. Different Time. Lot more inflation in a variety of different areas has happened since then.

If the money is going to the right people, I don't give a damn what the budget of a tv show or movie is, as a person who works for none of these studios!

How are we arguing for WGA and SAG members to get what they deserve in one breath, but chastising movie budgets in the next?

Because more money for writers and actors in general means budgets will have to go up. Either that, or there will be less production, and more money will be made by fewer people.

If they really wanted to go all out after the AMPTP they should have actors asking people to boycott movie going and drop their streaming subscriptions.

SAG aren't stupid, they're not going to tell the public to stop going to movies because A. most of the public won't listen and B. You're hurting other people not part of the fight.
