It's a weak year for Disney, but most other studios would kill for a GOTG3, hell even a Little Mermaid, in their down year. WB, Uni, and Paramount haven't had a movie on that scale of profitability yet this year. Scream and Evil Dead brought strong profits for their respective studios, but they've yet to have any other profitable movies this year. Uni is doing well with smaller budget movies, but Fast limping to break even won't help their overall box office this year.

Well, thankfully, lots of IP's are bleeding money now, so hopefully we can get the marketplace as it should be - balanced. IP without room for original and/or mid-budget films is the "Holl(o)w" in "Hollywood".

The problem is Hollywood has to also build new IP, with usually begins with original movies.

I saw lots of tweets yesterday about Devil Wears Prada turning 17 and though it will never happen, can you imagine if someone found a great way into a "20 years later" sequel? It's the rare chickflick that seems to resonate with men too bc it's not a romance, it's about finding yourself in the workplace. The nostalgia smash it would be.

Indiana Jones had a ton of things going against it.

 

1) 80 year old action star

2) Green screen

3) Aging fanbase 

4) Last movie was considered low point

5) Disney releasing a movie where Nazis are the baddies is probably considered "woke"

6) June is still a bloodbath due to being overcrowded

7) Picky audiences (especially boomers and gen X)
