JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

kal's already been on here. He's Superman001 or something like that

Goddarnit!! Falling short of copying and pasting all of Mrfantin's post and doing a cross examination, I thought for sure it was him. I sincerely apologize mrfantin65 to have even mentioned you with Kalel in the same breath.

But when you someone makes bold predictions of Frozen hitting 300 million......it was only then when I assumed, and was left w/o the umed.

I actually felt confident that Frozen would hit 50 in SK, and hoping that it could muster a legendary run of 190-195 to catch IM3.

Has this point been brought up lately, the impact of Godzilla killing Frozen's late legs? I mean what is the saturation point for a movie that hasn't dropped below it's OW?

Can we put some economies of scale perspective and compare it against movies that wasn't necessarily the biggest OW openers and all time BO grossers, but movies that had a stagnant boxoffice over handful of weeks?

they should've reduced subbed more. not attended well

3D subbed yeah, but it looks like 2D subbed is still doing well. Based on Wednesday TOHO numbers, 2D subbed held better than 2D dubbed, and 3D subbed held poorly compared to the other versions. I think that's why they're just gonna switch 3D subbed to 3D dubbed.

Percentage 4/23 4/16114.2% 24,887 21,790 Frozen (Dubbed)115.6% 6,078 5,256 Frozen (Subbed)  78.7% 1,699 2,159 Frozen (3D Subbed)

the costumes, hand gestures, and sing along reminded me of that in the video clip. its gotta shot to take off. they've loved karaoke in private all these years, they just may come out of the closet cause a boom. :hiphiphoray:

I think that's just a one-time event for promotion. I remember they did a similar event in America to promote sing-along, where people at different places (including Idina Menzel from Broadway) singing Let It Go live on GMA. But yeah, that event in Japan does have a Rocky Horror feeling.

it held fine but on Saturday/sunday subbed was 30% saturation, dubbed is over 50%. they can take half of the theaters and have 50-60% saturation like dubbed

Good point. But on weekdays the subbed versions are doing better, I think. I don't know for sure. Or maybe there are still demands for subbed, but most theaters only have one screen for it, so if they give it to dubbed, then people who want to see the subbed version cannot do that, and they'll lose potential audience. But I'm not sure about that either, so never mind. lol

Update about possible Frozen sequel.

(In late April, Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan F. Horn said that "we haven't really talked about a sequel" because the studio's current priority is the planned Broadway musical, which will require "four or five" additional songs to be written by Lopez and Anderson-Lopez)

Per Corpse

Biggest Weekends (Top 10) [2001-]:01. ¥3.601 billion - 07/09-10/200502. ¥3.423 billion - 07/19-20/200303. ¥3.329 billion - 07/21-22/200704. ¥3.314 billion - 07/22-23/200605. ¥3.160 billion - 04/17-18/201006. ¥3.048 billion - 07/21-22/200107. ¥2.963 billion - 07/17-18/201008. ¥2.960 billion - 07/18-19/200909. ¥2.917 billion - 07/10-11/201010. ¥2.836 billion - 07/19-20/2008Only one of the Top 10 weekends (since at least 2001) has been outside of that mid-July weekend (very popular weekend that begins Summer Vacation), so making this list is very difficult any other time of the year. However, we might see it happen once again this weekend as the films kinda mirrors those from that 2010 April weekend when Alice in Wonderland, Nodame Cantabile 2, Detective Conan 14 and Crayon Shin-chan 18 all opened together and exceeded expectations.Alice in Wonderland (2010) vs. Frozen (2014)Nodame Cantabile 2 (2010) vs. Thermae Romae II (2014)Detective Conan 14 (2010) vs. Detective Conan 18 (2014)Crayon Shin-chan 18 (2010) vs. Crayon Shin-chan 22 (2014)All of 2010's equivalent films opened over the weekend however while 2014's equivalents will be in their second weekends or seventh weekend in Frozen's case, except for Thermae Romae II which is opening making it comparable to Nodame Cantabile 2.This will make 2014 matching the 2010 equivalent films very difficult, however, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Partners 3 are also opening this weekend, so they can certainly make up the difference. Some big things would have to go wrong for this upcoming weekend not to break ¥3 billion, in my opinion, or at the very least fail to earn the ¥2.837 billion required to make the Top 10.Best-case scenario: ¥3.2/3.3 billion (#3/#5 all-time)Worst-case scenario: ¥2.6/2.7 billion (misses Top 10)

72,806 (-13.1%) - Frozen (Week 7)

Toho/Movix Combined Seating (04/26) [Top 55/88 theaters listed]
134,796 (NEW) - Thermae Romae II (Week 1)
111,237 (-13.4%) - Frozen (Week 7)
87,156 (-34.3%) - Detective Conan: The Sniper from Another Dimension (Week 2)

58,646 (NEW) - Partners the Movie 3 (Week 1)

32,689 (-40.2%) - Crayon Shin-chan: Serious Battle! Robot Dad Strikes (Week 2)

Combined, Toho and Movix Cinemas represent nearly 30% of the nation's theaters/screens.

Strong for Thermae Romae II. I just hope it makes the best of them.

And great hold for Frozen. It held on very well since theaters aren't really pushing The Amazing Spider-Man 2 very much it seems. The first film was actually the widest release of all time, and the first film to ever play on over 1,000 screens. But it clearly didn't need all the screens or showtimes as its opening weekend underwhelmed and it didn't recover either, dropping 53% from the lowest grossing film, Spider-Man 2, in the original trilogy. So this "adjustment" to the seating makes sense in the end. We'll see if it has any real effect on the film.

If you like tracking boxoffice, is there anything more fun than tracking a truly unusual run, especially if you really like the movie?

Here we are approaching its 7th weekend, Frozen hasn't dropped below its opening weekend yet, it hasn't even been close, and weekdays are increasing this week. Nothing seems to slow down the Frozen juggernaut, not time, direct competition or slowly losing seats.

Just think, it might not be until its 9th or 10th weekend before it dips below opening weekend, imagine if something like that ever happened in the North American market? :o
