JAPAN BOX OFFICE | Demon Slayer breaks all time record for OW

Recommended Posts

No because Japanese films are grossing more each year and balancing Hollywood's decline. 2012 is still up over 2011.That's the problem for Hollywood films, I believe. Too much local competition for them now. Japanese films have had over a 50% market share since 2008, and this year it could reach 70%. Before 2005, there were more Imported released but since then more Japanese films are being released.Hollywood is still doing alright, just last year Pirates 4, Cars 2, and Harry Potter 7.2 all grossed more in Japan than any other market for example. But overall, Hollywood is just having a really, really bad year.

To add to this post, this year has seen some big accomplishments.Doraemon: Nobita and the Island of Miracles became the highest grossing Doraemon film after 32 theatrical releases.Detective Conan: The Eleventh Striker opened higher than any other Detective Conan film and will finish as the second or third highest grossing film after 16 theatrical releases.More films grossed 1 billion yen or more in the first half of 2012 than in ny previous year. This is the biggest one and shows the market is stable/growing every so slightly. The problem you're probably seeing John is just Hollywood's lack of any blockbusters that interest the Japanese people. Pixar is a popular name, but only three of their films have achieved blockbuster status in the market. Spider-Man is also a popular name, though the franchise doesn't compare to Harry Potter, Star Wars, Pirates, or even Mission Impossible. Hollywood just didn't have any sure-fire blockbusters to release this year. Edited by Corpse

July 21-22

Weekend Ranking

1 (1) Umizaru: Brave Hearts (Toho) Week 2

2 (-) The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki (Toho) NEW

3 (2) Pokemon BW: Kyurem Vs. The Sacred Swordsman - Keldeo (Toho) Week 2

4 (4) Heruta Skelter (Asmik Ace) Week 2

5 (-) Brave (Disney) NEW

6 (3) The Amazing Spider-Man (Sony) Week 4

7 (5) Magical Girl Lyrical Nanaho (Aniplex) Week 2

8 (7) Go Anpanman! Revive Banana Island (Tokyo Theaters, Co.) Week 3

9 (8) Rinjo: The Movie (TOEI) Week 4

10 (9) Man on a Ledge (Disney) Week 3

-Umizaru: Brave Hearts claims it's second week on top. After 10 days, the film has grossed over ¥2.5 billion ($31 million) with 2 million admissions.

-The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki debuted on 381 screens to an impressive 276,326 admissions for a gross of ¥365,149,000 ($4.6 million). That's almost 3x as much as Hosoda's last film, 'Summer Wars', on par with Studio Ghibli's 'From Kokuriko Hill', and should lock up a ¥3 billion ($40 million) total with a good short at ¥4 billion ($50 million). Hosoda may indeed become Miyazaki's successor.

-Pokemon BW: Kyurem Vs. The Sacred Swordsman - Keldeo (Toho) exceeded ¥1 billion ($12.5 million) and 1 million admissions after 9 days.

-Brave debuted on 563 screens but failed in attracting an audience. The film only opened with 106,271 admissions for a gross of ¥147,806,800 ($1.9 million). 3D accounted for 57% of the weekend gross. This is bomb territory unless it manages extraordinary legs, but as tough as it is to imagine given Pixar's history, 1.5 billion ($20 million) is the absolute limit here. Such an underwhelming opening, and will surely become Pixar's lowest grossing film.. ever.

Wolf Children see an impressive debut. In fact, if you don't include first films based on TV/Manga, it's the best opening for a purely original film.

Also, for films that had extended opening weekends, previews, etc. I included their opening weekend under those conditions below their weekend gross itself.
