The incredibly long-standing record of 55-years held by Tokyo Olympiad is very likely to fall tomorrow. When this falls tomorrow, that's pretty much it. It's broken practically every record up to this point besides a couple weekend records (8th and 10th). There aren't any more records to really seek other than the remaining weekend records for the remainder of its run, and longevity-themed records like aiming to achieve the most weeks in the Top 5/10 and such.

What are the odds that Demon Slayer is the highest grossing movie next year too?

Probably unlikely. There's a Detective Conan next year, which has the potential to earn ¥10 billion (the previous two films both crossed ¥9 billion).

Definitely not going to win Gregorian Calendar year 2021, but isn’t the Japanese box office year a bit different? Starting on the first weekend of December or something?

If so DS could have 11B+ in 2021 and win that year as well.

New Year's Eve is the weakest day during the Christmas/New Year holidays, so this is an expected result. New Year's Eve is the biggest holiday in Japan, and they have many celebrations. Don't want to see any "but why isn't it bigger?" comments.

A bit of a subdued New Year's Weekend in terms of increases/decreases, but based on these estimates, this weekend is still only down 4% versus 2020, and actually up 3% versus 2019, and that's with almost no Hollywood support. New Year's Weekend is one where more adult-driven films thrive, and there weren't really any films to benefit much from the adults being on holiday this year.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train earned its 12th-consecutive weekend atop the box office, and delivered a great hold coming off of its unprecedented 133% increase last weekend to achieve the second biggest twelfth-weekend ever, even holding better than two of the previous post-giveaway weekends (and this weekend is up almost 60% compared to its 10th weekend). As mentioned, it has claimed practically all the records besides those it'll be vying for on the longevity charts, such as most weeks in the Top 5/10 and such. There's been some debate on where it could be heading, but it's still a bit early to project an accurate figure, but I believe we can expect it to either approach or just exceed ¥40 billion ($380 million+) based on what we know at the moment.

New Interpretation Records of the Three Kingdoms was one of the films to benefit from the New Year's Weekend, due to appealing more toward adults, remaining flat with last weekend. It has performed well since its great opening weekend, and is still on track to exceed the ¥4 billion (~$40 million) milestone.

Poupelle of Chimney Town enjoyed a good hold in its sophomore frame, and keeps it chances of reaching ¥2 billion (~$20 million) alive and well.

The Promised Neverland held a lot better than early numbers suggested on Saturday, and winded up with a pretty solid third weekend. A ¥2 billion (~$20 million) total isn't locked, but it remains likely. Most live-action Shonen adaptations stall out in the ¥1-1.5 billion range, so this one's going to outperform many of them.

Pokemon: Coco couldn't avoid the typical harsh second weekend drop the franchise experiences, and actually had one of the bigger second weekend declines in the long-running series. Pokemon's popularity has been on the decline over the better part of the last decade (fewer and fewer children in the country), especially the film franchise and anime series', so this is probably pretty expected. And, since it's appeal is almost exclusively towards families/children, the hardest hit demographic from COVID, it's likely suffering from those groups avoiding theaters like they have for every other younger-skewing film.

Peninsula had a decent debut, in my opinion, as it wasn't likely to be another Parasite or anything. It looks much more gory and violent for a horror film versus the more appealing ones that center around the suspense or thriller genres instead.
