This is going to be big. Big. #1 2015 animation big. People didnt go to DM2 for Gru, they went for the Minions. This is essentially DM3: Lite. And the Minions have only gotten bigger. I say $300M for now, good audience retention from DM2.

Well, it's in the eye of the beholder I guess. The 'Despicable' brand it's probably the biggest thing in animation atm. DOM, 'Minions' has a big chance of winning the animation crown and WW that's a lock. Really can't see it under 700M.

Absolutely not. It is unbelievably overrated.

Not really. The original is pretty underrated when you consider how much HTTYD and TS3 overshadowed it. Tangled didn't help matters either. 

 

DM2 is a bit overrated especially next to Shrek 2 (the closest comparison to DM2)

The GA does.  Movies are not made for us... they are made for the public (general usually but sometimes for a niche audience) and made (usually) to make money.

 

That's why it is so funny that people throw out the 'overrated' phrase anytime a movie they personally don't like does well.

 

DM2 & Frozen were not overrated... they were underrated here on the forums compared to what the general audiences thought.

 

HTTYD2 was overrated here on the forums.  It doesn't matter if we think it was great or that the critics think it was great... the general public rejected it.

This is why I hate this word. If DM2 made less than MU, or decreased from DM1, no one would say overrated, but since it blew up thanks to the minions and appeal of Gru and Agnes as well, and wasnt sophisticated like HTTYD2, but more of a saturday morning cartoon, its overrated. Youre right, the movies arent made for us, but for the public as a whole, and obviously they embraced it. Dont see how thats overrated. Overrated would be if they did mot embrace it, but we still hyped it up.

You guys also forget that the Minions may have been a few million short of $1 billion worldwide...but that doesnt matter because they still sell billions in merchandise, even though the franchise is only 4 years old. Even Spongebob wasnt selling billions in just 4 years. And its not just children. Huge teenage and good adult appeal as well, hence why DM2 made so much. It cant make $360M off just families. So the public loves it, they dont love Dragon. Too bad, so sad. People throw that word out like its trash.
