Sunshine, Light, and Joy

This is a post that I've been thinking about for awhile. Recently, I opened up the discussion to other members of the staff to get their feelings on the matter, and their opinions generally matched mine, which is this:

Within the last year or so, there's been a steady increase of negative posts in movie threads. We've always had some heated discussions for some movies, but recently things have not only gotten more histrionic in those threads (generally speaking, the CBM ones), but they've started to spread to other franchises and other movies as well. I'm not talking about out-and-out trolling, I'm talking about members feeling they have to consistently shit on a movie (or studio, or star) simply because they aren't interested in the current project or projects. With every piece of news about a movie, it's now a virtual guarantee that there's a flood of people rushing to say they think it sucks, they don't like the current trailer/tv spot/actor/actress/director/concept. And I get it -- we all have movies we don't like, movies which we think are bad ideas, industry people that just don't appeal to us. But there's a fine line between expressing your opinion about this and doing it so often, with such consistency, that the collective emphasis of all of it basically brings down the entire thread and thus the entire forum.

There's no easy answer to this. We don't want to crush freedom of expression here. But at the same time, the spirit of this forum is for people to have fun talking about the movies they love and the box-office runs they love.

To have fun.

And while it may be fun -- in a sense -- to personally vent about a movie, or to vent at people who dare to enjoy something you don't, it doesn't bring fun to our community. In fact, it generally drags down the overall fun for everyone else. We've had people repeatedly mention to us over the last several months or so that in some cases they don't even bother going into some threads -- even for movies they're curious about! -- because they just don't want to deal with the overall mess those threads contain. And frankly, that matches the personal opinion of most of the staff as well.

So this post is both a request and a warning.

The request: Next time you feel like taking a dump on a movie (or a topic) for the dozenth time, take a moment to consider whether it's really worth it. People probably already have a good idea of what your attitude about the project is. Maybe just put your posting energy into a movie that you enjoy and love or are excited about.

The warning: The staff is going to be taking a closer look at some of these threads and we'll be more active with temp thread-bans if we think it'll help the overall vibe of the forum. I'd rather we don't have to, but it's not going to constrain any of you too much if you aren't allowed to post about a movie you supposedly don't care about anyway.

Remember the words of Bill and Ted: "Be Excellent to Each Other".

They're just movies, guys. It's about having fun.

I can understand this to an extent, for example it is known that I am not a big fan of Zack Synder or his films. and I have expressed that opinion on numerous occasions, however I am a huge DC fan, and really want those movies to succeed, but as long as Zack Synder is attached to them, it limits my enthusiasm for liking any of those movies, however, I am still going to see JL.. with incredibly low expectations and when I see it and probably most likely don't like it, I will voice my opinion of it, but yeah there is no need attacking somone who has different taste then me. but I feel if someone hates a film by all means they should voice their opinion of that. but doing it in the same thread 100x can get old.

I don't think this notice applies to me, but maybe someone else thinks it does.....

Overall I don't mind the negativity as long as it stays out of the buzz and tracking thread (along with general talk and banter), that's the good one, let's keep it on topic.

So, basically...hardcore CBM (aka basement dwelling virgins) make reading threads more aggravating and depressing...what a shocker.

It isn't just CBMs, there are people who just want to rain on parades of others enjoying movies, even if they've expressed their opinions repeatedly already.

I think this is a great idea.

Well, hopefully with this new rule we can make everyone happy and a more enjoyable place to be. :)

So basically, you can dislike something but back up your arguments and don't go on about all the time!

So you guys have probably now seen the annoying announcement which popped up and needed to get dismissed. I'm re-posting the contents of it here, not just to keep it available as a reminder but also to provide a public space to talk about it. We'll pin this for awhile so that everyone has a chance to see it and comment (if they want).

I'm glad this was written. Part of my absence has been living life and not having as much time on my hands, but it was also the general negativity that swamped threads. The issue is it's not done with any levity. The folks who constantly do this seemingly have no idea how humorless or petty they come across (or they don't give a shit). I've made fun of more than a handful of projects over the years, but when it always comes from a relentlessly mean-spirited place, why bother reading it or responding? It's simply exhausting. Anyway, miss you guys.

Everyone should just take a break from the CBM threads and watch Better Call Saul tonight so I have some people to live post with in the CC thread.

Yes Oz.. Words of Wisdom for such a fine show, which by the way, is on tonight.. Now that Jimmy has pretty well buried Chuck, we can look forward to Mike surveilling someone tonight for at least 1/2 the episode.. :bravo:

Tonights episode looks like its gonna be mostly about Nacho and Hector.  About time Nacho gets some love, he's had like 20 seconds of screen time this season.

But Honestly , I could probably watch a show with minimal dialogue just about Mike Ehrmantraut following people, figuring shit out, and screwing over people he doesn't like with his really elaborate plan.  Lul.

I'm trying to think of ways I might have contributed to this issue. I may have been this way a bit for BATB, but I stand by everything I said about it and continue to not understand why it's defended so fervently by some people. But I thought I knew when it was time to shut up.

Conversely, is my Pixar fandom so obnoxious that it aggravates people into posting broadly negative feelings about their current films? I admit I might have gotten that way with John Carter and The Good Dinosaur but most of the time I think I'm a lot more "informed optimist" than "blind fanboy"

These aren't questions that have easy or definite answers, but it's something for all of us to keep in mind. I know sometimes I've been overly emphatic about making sure my personal opinion was heard.

I've never seen you as a blind Pixar fanboy, so you've got that going for you.

Personally I might be a little mean to @MrPink. Sorry Pink. Also the Taika thing.

You can charge way more, if you have a card with a higher limit.
