Maybe there was some franchise fatigue domestically, sure.   But I tend to think changing a major character in a franchise will always effect it's gross.  I call it "The Unwritten Sequel Rules".   See "Speed 2" for reference, lol.   See "Independence Day" this summer.  Main Characters are important and just can't be switched out when audience have become attached to them.   I don't agree with Shia's antics in his personal life the last 5 years or so but that doesn't take away how much of a drawing power he was to this franchise.   He was basically the "Audience" by proxy in the experience with the Transformers.

I don't really see it as the same when those movies you mentioned had said human characters fighting the antagonists while Transformers more or less had said characters stuck in a war between alien robots and the lead protagonist robots still remained.

With a few exceptions, franchise fatigue tends to set in after the third movie, as that is when the de facto trilogy concludes for audiences. Less people want a fourth serving of what feels like the same ol' same ol', domestically of course.

Bring back TJ Miller. Give him amnesia and say he rolled down a hill instead of disintegrating

The thought of a multi million dollar shot being dedicated to the comedic sidekick dying will never cease to crack me up

The entire shot is hilarious, it's so elaborate and there are like a million mini-explosions that make zero sense before he finally melts

Let's not forget the underrated MVP, Jack Reynor with the goofiest yelling expression on his face as he runs for his life.
