filmscholar
Wow, looks great. Very authentic, captures that time in Hip Hop very well. With Dr. Dre and Ice Cube behind this I'm sure it's going to be good. F. Gary Grey understands the culture and time so he was the right Director for this. "Notorious" The Notorious B.I.G./Biggie Smalls movie is the only Hip Hop Bio-Pic to compare. I felt though it was suppose to be an original story that "8 Mile" was an Eminem Bio-Pic in Disguise, it had just way to many similarities to his actual life and story. But technically speaking the Biggie movie is the only Hip Hop Bio Pic: . Total Lifetime Grosses Domestic: $36,843,682 83.0% + Foreign: $7,528,069 17.0% = Worldwide: $44,371,751 "Notorious" had a low 20 Million budget but managed about 44 Million Worldwide which isn't bad for a Hip Hop movie. mahnamahna
this has potential around 70 million domestic $70 million? $120-140 million is possible. I think this and Ricki & the Flash will break out this August. Adults will be looking for some non-SFX related entertainment.
Jandrew
Notorious is embarrasing. It literally had a 4-day run. $23M over MLK weekend, and poof. $36M total. Those legs are embareasing to look at, I'd rather SOC do 6/36 than do that, but I think SOC will fare alot better. It likely wont contend, but this looks like the kind of biopic that could contend for awards, Notorious was more "a BET production." Yet it's the 2nd highest grossing film based on Hip Hop and 8th all Time Bio-Pic. You have to look at the genre and not just the legs. I just posted the numbers, Movies based on Hip Hop don't break the Box Office Open. The only reason "8 Mile" was a huge hit it came out at the height of Eminem's Success, he had a Blockbuster album, soundtrack and song out during the time it was released. So yes "Notorious" legs weren't the greatest but for the Hip Hop subject it managed to outdo everyone but Eminem when he was alive and well and Biggie was dead for over a decade. You also have to realize, Biggie died before his 2nd album, he was a very young artist. I think it's a testament to his legacy to have a Bio Pic do that well when he only released 3 albums during his lifetime. As for the "Made for BET" comment, that's kinda what they were going for. Something that can be played on television for many years after. It is played on VHI, BET,MTV and other stations every year in the 6 years since it came out. filmscholar
You read both my statements wrong. No Jan, I understood your point. You speaking strictly from a performance standpoint. I was just saying "Notorious" already succeeded just having the 20 Million OW to begin with when you analyze Hip Hop films and the Box Office. Also your 2nd point was about the "Quality", you felt "Notorious" felt to much like a TV movie. Fair criticism but as I said, I think they were going for that. They needed something that would have legs on television. For the record, even if it's good I don't see "SOC" contend for any awards. It's just rare for the Academy to nominated anything Hip Hop related though it has happen in the past. But it's mostly cause of the music not the actual movie or acting.
