Elle Fanning, “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” star Olivia Cooke and “Mistress America” breakout are three of the top contenders for the female lead in Steven Spielberg‘s adaptation ofErnie Cline‘s “Ready Player One,” multiple individuals familiar with the casting situation toldTheWrap.

Fanning, Cooke and Kirk will test for the role of Art3mis, the avatar of Samantha Cook within the Oasis, which is the virtual reality universe at the center of the sci-fi story.

Insiders insist it’s early in the casting process and that casting director Ellen Lewis is narrowing the field for Spielberg so he can move quickly once he’s able to turn his attention away from “Bridge of Spies” and “The BFG.” Two other actresses are believed to be on the initial shortlist, though their identities remain a mystery.

I'm just glad Spielberg is making a non period film again. He felt relevant again with Lincoln, but Bridge of Spies looks like boring late 80's/early 90's Oscar bait and the BFG seems like an odd choice.

Additionally, Justin Kroll of Variety has revealed that Jurassic World star Nick Robinson (The Kings Of Summer) is an early favorite of Spielberg's for the role of Parzival, the OASIS avatar of Wade Owen Watts, the main protagonist in the Ernest Cline novel. Nothing is official yet and there are several other contenders, but considering Spielberg already worked with Robinson when he produced the fourth Jurassic Park installment, Robinson likely has a leg up on the competition at the moment.

Interested in seeing who gets cast as the adult leads. Jeff Bridges has shown up in pretty much every fan casting of Ogden Morrow (including my CAYOM film), but he seems almost too obvious. Let's see what they do.
