When a character gets plugged in to a virtual world it's tough for the audience to maintain interest and the movie to maintain tension as the audience knows that the character is himself/herself not really experiencing anything and just lying down somewhere else.

The Matrix got it right but in that our world is shown as fake and it was unique in that the fake world the character is plugged into is our real world. That helped connect with characters in the "fake" world.

Are there other good films where the character is plugged into a virtual world?

both Trons and parts of Virtuosity are the first ones that come into my brain.  Now as for them being "good" is obviously up to someone's opinion :P

well I am not going to say that Virtuosity was "good" (although I like it for what it is), but you do get to see a young Denzel Washingon and young Russell Crow in their first movie together ;)
