LOL at the "Streep isn't a draw but Kendrick is" comment. Tell that to Mamma Mia!, Julie & Julia, The Devil Wears Prada, It's Complicated, and, heck, even Hope Springs and Doubt, with their hard-to-sell premises made more bank than they had any right to do thanks to her name. Kendrick has never had a hit whose box office success could be traced to her being in it.

And Iron Lady. That movie made 30 million in the US on the back of nothing but Meryl's name.

Kendrick is not a box office pull at all. She's a perfectly fine actress and pretty, but seriously doubt she'd be the reason why more people would go and watch Into the Woods. The ensemble cast as a collective, fairy tale movie at Christmas, lack of other options this year and well known characters would be the major pulls at this time of the year. I recon it will do quite well.

Hobbit has one of the better drops. I like that.

P.K actually rose yesterday by over 18%! That's not common is it? I mean, I know it's a foreign film, but I don't remember anything ever rising on Xmas eve...

grim called this yesterday. Since most Indian-Americans aren't celebrating Christmas, Christmas Eve is often a chance for them to see movies together.

Someone said Dhoom 3 rose on Christmas Eve last year, too. Makes sense if much of the audience for it doesn't celebrate the holiday.

They have previews for Christmas Day openers? I thought a lot of theaters closed early, or is that New Year's Eve?

The theaters here in town had 7pm shows for both the holdovers and the movies that are opening today. That was pretty much the limit though. No 9pms or 10pms or midnights.

The movie posters for Mamma Mia have many faces on them.  Amanda Seyfried is just as prominent on them as Streep.  Movie poster for Julia and Julia is both Streep/Adams.  Movie poster for Devil is both Streep/Hathaway.  Movie poster for Hope Springs is both Streep/Baldwin.  Streep is somewhat of a draw, but it makes more sense to have included Kendrick in more of the marketing since the target audience of Into the Woods is probably females between 10-17 years old.  Older than the Frozen crowd, but it is still PG and a Disney film.

So if 1.1m for ITW is impressive so must be 850k for Unslayen.

I thought it was great for both. Theaters here close at 6 PM. The last shows are at 4 PM and that is if the movie is under 2 hours long. Hobbit only had one show yesterday.
