CoolioD1
I think it would be neat to see an r-rated movie win a year, because I think movies are better when they have blood and naughty words, so sure, go for it.

ecstasy
Sony's THE INTERVIEW has scored $40M online, $6M in theaters...for those keeping track. — Exhibitor Relations (@ERCboxoffice) January 20, 2015 <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> 40m online? Shit that's damn good. They need to follow suit with Blackhat ASAP. Edited January 20, 2015 by ECSTASY
filmlover
<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> Impressive, although it's probably still gonna lose a bundle for a wide theatrical release that ended up not happening.

TalismanRing
I'm not certain that without the controversy and releasing on schedule, it would have made much more than 46M. Agreed and they take more of the profits from online. Too bad they wasted $30m on advertising preparing for the theatrical release when the free advertising they got was much bigger and more worthwhile. Nice to see Selma's huge jump on MLK day. The Panda
Even though I wasn't huge on Sniper, I hope it wins the year still. I like Eastwood, I like Cooper, and I want Hollywood to push for more R rated/adult drama tentpoles like American Sniper, Gravity, Wolf of Wall Street, and Gone Girl. TServo2049
I think Panda knew it was PG-13, he said "R rated/adult drama". We are lacking in PG-13 adult drama tentpoles too. Edited January 20, 2015 by TServo2049

Gopher
Go Selma! Sniper is already the most impressive box office performer of the decade to me. I don't *love* the film but non-franchise R rated adult movies breaking records doesn't really bother me. TalismanRing
Incredible jump for Selma, have we ever seen +20% from the estimates before? That's 20% over all four days, but they just grossly underestimated MK Day. They were off $2.3m on Monday ($2.7m vs $5m) about 85%. Correction there off about $500,000 of that for the weekend. forg
So are we counting Sniper as a 2014 movie? That's super bogus, although I would laugh so hard if it won the year Well Titanic and Avatar were December releases that won their release year respectively even if a lot of their box office came from the succeeding year so if AS could do that, well it will have nice company
