Shaft | June 14 2019 | New Line. Jessie T Usher, Samuel L Jackson

A sequel I never asked for, but I'm not opposing to seeing over 19 years later. I watched the original remake in theater, because I was a fan of Boyz and Christian Bale's performance in American Psycho (pre-Batman era). Mark this under "somewhat pleasantly surprised" this even exists.

It looks like fun. Richard Roundtree being in it was the selling point for me. And glad they are using the iconic and classic
Shaft theme song. They must have been tempted not to do for fear of being accused of being too obvious, but saw that at times obvious might be a good thing.

Would be funny if this out-opened MiB considering WB sold the foreign rights to Netflix

I think it looks like it will be a lot more fun then MIB.

And, yeah, selling the forgieng rights to the film is always a gamble. Upside:If it flops it won't cost you as much, you have recouped part of your losses; The downside:if it's hit, you make a lot less money.

Studios policies on selling foreign rights vary: Lionsgate seems to sell off the foreign rights to almost everything it makes; Disney seldom sells off the foreign rights.

The Disney reluctance..they do sell rights occasionally, but not very often much less then other studios do ...stems from "Pretty Woman" back in 1989; Michael Eisner sold the foreign rights on the advice of some marketing experts that Amereican Comedies do not do well overseas. It proved to be a huge hit not only in the US (it made Julia Roberts into a star overnight) but was a hit everywhere. Eisner made a comment that after all his year sin the film business he should have known better then to trust experts, and was very, very, slow to sell off foreign rights after that, that the policy continues at the Mouse to this day.
