Weekend Actuals 7/3-7/5: Inside Out 29.77M, JW 29.24M, Genisys 27.02M. Greek Wedding's record survives

Recommended Posts

I saw the title and was like "ohhhh myyyy goooddd..."

So... How long until Greek Wedding's record actually goes down?

Hmm? Maybe with Alice 2 if it gets to $250M.

Or maybe with Independence Day 2 with $265-285M, if Dory opens massively and puts it to second place on OW.

Indeed, it was one weird run. $241m with its highest weekend at $11.1m in weekend #20. Can't help but laugh when I think about $90m openers like Godzilla that came up pretty far short of Greek's $241m total.

When I was broke and the features editor for the high school paper, I used my Greek Wedding ticket stub many times over to see movies for free. The ticket taker never flinched when I presented the stub and acted as if I'd just returned from the restroom or water fountain. I still feel shame.

All hail Greek Wedding, once and future king of the also-rans!

My Big Fat Greek Wedding's run is still unbelievable. It could never be duplicated. And it's gonna make the sequel's run all the more difficult to watch. It'll be lucky if it even makes 1/10th of the original.

So happy that Inside Out enjoyed at least one weekend at #1.

Wait, they're making a Greek Wedding sequel? I thought Gopher was just kidding with that post, ha.

Nope.

Nia Vardalos is a great example of a one-hit wonder actress. She's had no success outside of that film, so it's surprising that she's agreeing to do a sequel, that arriving way too many years later.

Also opening the same weekend as BVS, so bombs away.

I am so done with this shit ass American country, couldn't even give my dino babies the first place again for the fourth time. Instead it gave it to a bunch of stupid feelings.

I think you've lost that loving feeling.

Oh, I sincerely doubt that. It could still break records in the U.K., maybe.

It would have probably broken all records in Greece, but the Greek economy now resembles the title of a different Nia Vardalos movie

Hey, maybe it will be like Mamma Mia against TDK. :P

Gonna point this out because somebody has to once every summer: Mamma Mia did incredible business. 27m OW against Dark Knight and a 5x multiplier is good enough--610m worldwide, without opening in most of the markets that cater to boffo international business these days, is outstanding.

Nia Vardalos is such a weird case of a one hit wonder. I just can't put my finger on it. She came out of nowhere with a surprise hit and even has the on-screen likability that could carry her through any project. But then she did that flop spin-off show and then embarked on a bunch of projects that she herself put together in an attempt to catch lightning in a bottle again that were met with nothing but critical disdain and complete lack of interest from audiences. Was the stench from that spin-off show so powerful that she couldn't even land a hit sitcom? Success completely eluded her after making such a big mark. Again, weird.

As I said in the estimates thread:

I don't understand the hate for MBFGW, particularly going into this weekend. Sure, it didn't endure in the cultural consciousness, but it earned that record by starting small and then building and building to #2 in weekend 20. That was astounding even in 2002. It was a perpetual-motion-machine of WOM.

And yet people hate on the movie now. It's almost like the Ally McBeal of cinema, seemingly nobody on the Internet will admit that they liked it back then, or that its popularity back then was legitimate.

LOL at the Greek economy jokes. Yeah, forget that market for now. That shit is worse than Portugal.

I think Greek Wedding was the right movie at the right time and almost lightning in a bottle. By the time the spinoff sitcom came on air, no one cared for it anymore, it was already old news just a year later basically.
