I think Toy Story 3 was big in Japan although not at Frozen-levels obviously but $127 million doesn't happen very often. Minions on the other hand just did very well in almost every market but disappointed in China so its grosses were spread out.

Yeah but I think you meant big as in $200 million big lol  in that case it's interesting that only the original movies out of the 4 have a foreign gross of over $200 million (Frozen with Japan and Zootopia with China).

 I would say $130.7M for TOY STORY 3 in Japan is definitely "big"

Japan isn't too keen on its comic book adaptations.  In fact, comic book adaptations are the only types of films that you can say are "front-loaded" in the Japanese box office, which mind you, is a rare occurrence as films tend to open small and go on to have multipliers that are usually above 5.  As for the Jungle Book, all of the live Disney fairy tale adaptations have done great business in Japan and hopefully the Jungle Book does not become the trend-breaker.  As of now, both Zootopia and The Jungle Book are tracking for 5 billion yen or above which is a great cumulative for Disney which is, at the moment, the only non-local brand that has sustained itself and proved consistent at the Japanese box office (Disney has had at least one film in the top 10 highest grossing films of each year in Japan for quite some time).  Zootopia opening a week before Golden Week which is one of the biggest box office business days in the calendar year is going to really aid towards the film becoming a huge success because most of the year-end top 10 comprises of films released during Golden Week and because the week before is deflated, one should expect a huge increase during the actual week days and the weekend.  Once word of mouth reaches a certain point, the drops from Golden Week should be spectacular and it should hold well until summer.

" Korea posted an increase of 11% in its 7th weekend with a cume of $23.4M"  THAT'S INSANE!  Reminds me of Frozen increasing for two to three weeks in a row during its Japan box office run!  This is going to hit $30+ million!   Hopefully the success in the major Asian markets translates well to its eventual Japanese run!

Deadline: Having grossed $276.7M domestically and $523M internationally through yesterday, Disney’s Zootopia is now heading north of $800M today. So far it is the biggest worldwide grosser of 2016.

Zootopia currently at $800+ million.  From current markets, Zootopia should easily pass the $900 million mark without Japan meaning if it breaks out in Japan and holdovers are strong, Zootopia will become the fourth animated feature in history to cross the coveted $1 billion mark.  Of course, I'm not one to get my hopes up but it would be CRAZY and AWESOME if Zootopia did manage to cross the $1 billion mark.  This will make Walt Disney Animated Studios the only animated studios in history to have two $1+ billion grossing animated films.

Golden Week (4/29 - 5/6) is the week in which multiple holidays take place and is one of the biggest weeks out of the entire year in terms of box office attendance wise. Additionally, many of the year-end Top 10 films are released prior or during this week and go on to have great legs.  Zootopia will be released one week prior to Golden Week which should act as the launching pad for its box office performance.  Movies, no matter how terrible all get decent (or exceptional depending on the quality and resonance with audiences) boost during Golden Week.  Due to Golden Week being right after Spring Break (final term of school begins in Jan. and ends late in March), Japanese students only get so much time to take it easy and rest before school starts again (the new school year begins in April) and because many companies are closed, going to the movies is the perfect way to spend time with your family.  Golden Week along with Obon (which is in August so Zootopia won't be taking advantage of that) are the biggest weeks/weekends for the box office.  

 

For example, Cinderella opened to around $4.7 million and dropped only 8% during the weekend (Saturday and Sunday) and then grossed an additional $8.8 million from Monday to Wednesday during the actual Golden Week and dropped around 38% post-Golden Week.  Cinderella's final gross was $46.6 million meaning it made roughly 29-30% of its total earnings during Golden Week.

Indeed. But I think that record will last for a short while, because DORY and DESPICABLE ME 3 have a great chance at 1B WW too, so that will make it:

2 for Disney Animation

2 for Illumination

2 for Disney Pixar
