This could actually be a first. It's rare for a director to make two films a year, let alone in a situation like that.

In terms of real world importance the big short is way more important what happened in that movie impacted and will impact the world for years if not decades to come it has shaped global politics and life. Spotlight while chilling and important is relatively old news and small sclae compared

that's why they had screenplay on first. spotlight bookended the show. only won the first award of the night and the last award of the night.

Spotlight is a good winner, definitely not the most deserving film, but not close to the least either.

 

It was a very weird Oscar year.

OMG Spotlight!! YESSS! I was rooting for this movie to beat The Revenant, which is not even the best movie in the Best Picture category (Brooklyn is my favorite and Spotlight & Room are tied in 2nd). But the hype for The Revenant made me skeptical. Not to mention Spotlight only won one other Oscar. So I'm happy right now.
