I don't think this will do well at the box office. It releases on the 2nd weekend of Coco and a week before Star Wars: TLJ. GDT films don't do that well at the box office.

It'll probably go wide in early January after the Star Wars buzz has cooled a bit. I think it could be the geek date movie of choice that month

The Golden Globes are on January 7. I can see them waiting until then to expand it really wide when it won't competing with a thousand other movies for screens at the multiplexes.

I imagine this goes into 500-600 theaters around Christmas, slowly expands on New Years, and goes very wide on January 5.

That's more intense than I expected. For some reason it hadn't registered to me that it was R.....but fish sex. So it makes sense. 

 

I went to look up Octavia Spencer's list of awards nominated and received before I made a "Wouldn't it be nice if she got recognition for something not about 'the struggle'." and someone's  already edited it in that she gets nominated for this role at the Globes

Though, to play Devil's advocate, let's not forget that both movies were based on bestsellers. For example, Britt Robertson is not really a box office draw, yet A Dog's Purpose made 60M+ DOM despite terrible controversy surrounding animal cruelty. Another example: while Tim Burton has some say with audiences, Eva Green..... not as much (sadly), yet Miss Peregrine made almost 90M DOM. Hell, there's plenty of other examples too.

 

But I do wanna believe that she does have pull with audiences. It's Octavia fucking Spencer, for God's sake.

@MCKillswitch123 I believe that's called "added value". Since she hasn't been given a movie to headline, we cannot measure her sole boxoffice power, but her presence seems to make a difference aka adds value. There's no way that people flocked to The Shack for Sam Worthington.

I was so excited when Octavia was announced for this... I thought she was going to be the romantic lead.

Spencer doesn't exactly play against type in this movie, but she certainly has her moments

 

It's a fairly mild R by Del Toro standards. Mostly for language with some brief spurts of violence and nudity
