MEH-MORIAL DAY WEEKEND BOX OFFICE | Abandon all hope, the box office is dead. 3 day weekend #s X-Men 65M, Alice 28.1M, Angry Birds 18.7M, Civil War 15.1M, Neighbors 9.1M. Bad openings, horrible holdovers.

Recommended Posts

Tomorrowland  0.75 + 8.97 + 11.85 (21.57 2-day)

Flopping Glass  1.50 + 8.22 + 8.65 (18.37 2-day)

If Alice 2 has the exact same legs as Tomorrowland Sunday onwards, it will get 79.5m.

Lone Ranger, another Disney-Depp-170m+* combo, did 89m. That is well gone for Alice 2.

edit: * lol, that was 215m. Tomorrowland's budget was also more than Alice 2 at 190m.

Ultimately this is all about two things.

1. Apocalypse. Not particularly well reviewed and coming off the back of three massive comic book hits in a few months. The biggest of which is merely weeks old. Fatigue plus reviews have watered X-Men down.

2.  Nobody wanted a sequel to Alice in Wonderland. Six years is a long time to wait to make a follow-up. Ironically it's much better than the original, but families know what movies they want to save their money for this summer.

Fox seems to have a weak relationship with Marvel. There are not any reports that they were doing a Sony-style deal on Fantastic Four or selling back those rights. It would also be tricky to introduce mutants into the MCU. I would be open to it if Feige could work it out.

Perhaps they should take a cue from the comics (which often have different continuities/worlds collide) and have Fox X-Men Universe and the MCU collide due to the events in Infinity War.

X-Men is dead. Alice is beyond dead. Civil War might indeed end below Iron Man 3 which is fucking hysterical. Angry Birds will need to get Puerto Ricod into the 100M or it will fail to reach the mark.

Terrible weekend. Save Us TMNT2! Save Us BAY!

You willing to take my TMNT 2 under Ant-Man DOM bet on the BO casino? I mean, you're already getting 75 points from me this week, I need some payback

i know people like to throw out the "but some folks worked so haaaaard on it" whining whenever someone says anything like this, but man i am getting an immeasurable amount of pleasure from Alice failing this bad.

Deadpool is a gimmick that will get old fast. Fox would be wise not to bet all their eggs on him.

Deadpool could become Ted the bear very quickly.

I love DoFP and consider it one of the best superhero films of the decade (and I'm not an X-Men fan at all). It's better than any of the Marvel films that came out with the sole exception of CA2 which I consider on par with DoFP.

DoFP was sensational.

It's really too bad about that CW leak that happened so early into its domestic run.  It makes analyzing the reason for the bad legs impossible.  (Are these going to be the worst MCU legs ever?)

MCU films have the exact demographic that having a perfect copy of the film online is likely to impact, but the film also has a third act that is utterly unlike any MCU film and maybe any superhero film ever.  Has there ever been one that doesn't feature a bad guy getting defeated in the final act?  I can't think of one.

If future MCU films go back to having normal legs, it's going  to be impossible to know which factor was the primary one for CW's rapid fall.  Hopefully, Disney doesn't react by taking less narrative chances. Be interesting to see if Disney rethinks their worldwide release pattern, or stays the course.

Alas, poor Summer. I knew it, BOT; a season of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy; it hath borne me on many record giving massive money a thousand times; and now, how abhorred in my imagination it is! My gorge rises at it. Here hung those lips that I have kissed I know not how oft. Where be your success now? Your dollars? Your records? Your flashes of joy that were wont to set the table on a roar?

Bad numbers, but I guess Fox is probably focused on overseas grosses. Is the movie performing good overseas?

Fox should be glad that Alice is flopping badly. If Warcraft also underperforms ( at least domestic ), maybe the next drops won't be huge like BVS.

I'm sorry, but no movie will have BVS multiplier. Hell, even Fantastic Four had a bigger multiplier than BVS. London Has fallen almost had a 3 multiplier for its opening weekend.

200 million is dead, BUT I'm curious about the drops. Given its A-  cinema score, I guess audiences are liking it ( even more than First Class ).

So, my final prediction for Apocalypse:

Domestic: 160 million

Overseas: 430-450 million

Worldwide: 590-610 million.

Basically every movie has these leaks. IMHO just people are tired of these stereotypical CBMs and every future TA will drop from the previous one.

Sure, but they don't all have HD-quality copies out there three or four days into their (domestic) release.  I don't think it impacted a large number of people from initially going to see it in the theaters, but I think there's no question it would have an impact on repeat viewings.  Plenty of anecdotal evidence that that's happening, but that's all it is beyond speculation.

But I also don't think it's a film that has the same sort of repeat appeal as most other MCU films, just due to its nature.  Sort of a perfect storm leading to its bad legs, IMO.

Every movie has it but they are not always good quality leaks like cap 3.

No one is tired but maybe people like you.

I will think about it... You think TMNT2 is going over Ant-Man DOM total?
