Weekend Actuals (Page 96): Dory 73M | IDR 41M | CI 18.2M | Shallows 16.8M | Conjuring 7.7M | Jones 7.6M

Dory had one of the best holds, only Angry Birds and Zootopia did better in that regard in the top 15. Goes to show that this week's openers will not be tapping into that kid audience at all. Should be a crazy good weekend hold for Dory.

It's funny how everyone was predicting IDR's failure e.g. not crossing 100M but now, that it's doing much better than expected, people are calling it a disappoint.

More people predicted ID:R doing over 400m than under 100m.  So, yeah, no.

This is a colossal disappointment and anything else is just spin.

Hmm. I would think Dory would see a pretty big increase on Saturday. Like a 40%+ increase. But, yeah, $80M is out. Probably just under $70M.

Deadline didn't post any actual numbers though, just random projections that were made hours ago. Dory actually still has a chance at 80m.

‘Dory’ Still The Big Fish With $62M+, ‘ID4’ Sequel In High $40Ms, ‘Shallows’ Rides A Wave Toward $13M – Midday B.O.

independence day resurgence

Won't be surprised if IDR goes lower by the time Friday actuals come in. A 40-45M bow most likely. Expecting the Shallows number to go up by the end.

IDR may have been a disappointment six months in the making, but it's still a disappointment. This and Dory represent an interesting dichotomy between how and how not to execute revivals of nostalgic franchises

It probably helps in Dory's case, that FN is regarded as an amazing family classic, whereas Independence Day is seen as more of a silly and entertaining disaster movie.

Lmfao, people were predicting 400+? Seriously, that's insane to me. Regardless, IDR squeaking past 100 would still be a mega disappointment like you say. And it's unlikely to happen either. Multi will be 2x bad and I doubt that OW stays above 45.

It may be in part that storytelling and characterization was what made "Finding Nemo" loved. ID was a moment where large-scale destruction broke out and you could see it on the big screen. Wow, these aliens DID THAT. Audiences have seen that kind of thing so much now. It's like finding Kraft singles in a grocery story. Go out for an action movie and you'll find large scale destruction.

While Independence Day has absolutely nothing on FN, especially in terms of characters and story, it still had pretty damn great disaster scenes, better then most disaster scenes nowadays, not to mention Will Smith's charisma. Resurgence has neither of these things.
